Scam phone calls.........

We've all been plagued by scam calls, I'm sure and hopefully recognise them for what they are.

Over the last few weeks I've had a lot, mostly at meal times for some reason. I let incoming calls go to answerphone - it's usually a case of they hang up or occasionally a 'sales' message machine will talk to my machine, how ridiculous is that.......

Today a call came through [no message left] and 1471 revealed it came from a number with the area code 01632. OK, but that code isn't a real one, see here http://www.area-codes.org.uk/01632.php

Just a heads-up as a busy person or business might fall into the trap of thinking they'd missed a legitimate call and call them back, you can guess the rest..........

P.S. I know you can get call blocking devices or subscribe to caller ID but hey, I'm a Scot.........

Makes little difference. Autodailers just cycle through numbers until they get a dial tone.

I recently had a number ring me and cut off after two rings, this happened six times over two days and as I am determined no scammer will ever get me I did not do the usual phone back.

They know most people hate a missed call and curiosity makes them do the call back.

I googled the number and it was a scam, if you phone back you get an automated answer that apparently drags on for 10mins at 85p a minute, I blocked and deleted it so can't find it now to put up here.

I had a Flextel number (perfectly legitimate - https://www.flextel.com/) in my 'public' email address line. Most websites reject such numbers as not a valid UK number. Sadly few recipients of my public email every called the number so I let it expire.

There is a very simple cure, we changed our phone to a BT 4600. It only let's known numbers through. If it doesn't know the number the caller is ask to give there name. Scammers don't/won't and any unknown numbers you can block permanently. In the three weeks we've had it not one nuisance call.

This sounds interesting. My current set-up is 3 x BT Edge handsets - 1 'main' + 2 extensions. If I bought a single (say) 4600 would it be compatible with the extension phones, i.e. function on them too - or does the whole set-up need to be 3 x 4600s?

I don't see why a private phone needs to be spamed by any body infact a pretty much hate it happening

on top of that I don't care if they don't like my attitude

im polite on the first call asking them not to ring this number again as its a private number
second call im not so nice and make it very clear
third call I rip there heads off and rather insultive to boot

why because I didn't ask for them calls so I don't see why I should have to put up with them

i just use caller id if they don't put there number in it wont let them call me .. when the phone rings leave it for a minute and if it goes off no problem if it rings again I answer it

I've found the perfect solution. I dont answer the house phone

My wife passes me the phone if its for me

I normally pry for more information and they generally hang up on me.

One tip I learned over time, is to answer the phone but not speak, wait until someone on the line speaks, if it's an auto dialled machine it will hang up.

I was getting them, asking for Mr Benson (not my name), when I explained there was no Mr Benson they went into a sales pitch, I soon realised it was simply to get you talking instead of banging the phone down.

Eventually I answered one and when they asked for the elusive Mr Benson I said 'yes that is me', it blew them right off track and I got a deathly silence, then I told them where to go and banged the phone down, not had any since so they must have a delete number button

I don't answer numbers I don't have stored, if they want me they will leave a voicemail. If the same number keeps calling but doesn't leave a message they get blocked.

Same here, if it turns out to be spam I put it in the phone book as "SPAM" so next time it rings it shows "SPAM" on the screen.
