So , where are these spammers operating from ?
I guess it's illegal to con people so why do bt allow it to happen , perhaps so long as they get there cut they're no bothered .

I believe most of the calls start in Holland, the auto dialers are there, once a call is answered, it can be transfered to an agent in the UK. At least that is one way they get around the uk laws

I registered with the TPS and I don't think I've had a call since. Maybe a couple from eon about upgrading my electricity meter, but they are my provider so I guess it wouldn't catch those. It's free and it seems to work.

That doesn't seem to apply to these people who keep calling about a government grant for a new boiler. We are getting 3 calls a dy about them. I live in the vain hope that a customer might want to call me at some point so cant do a mass block thing. I think I might have to get a boiler just to shut the up..

We moved in here, six years ago. There's a landline cos that's where the broadband comes in but we've never plugged a phone into it - everyone we want to speak to has our mobile numbers and we exclusively use them.
Couldn't tell you what the landline number is...

Seriously, I think if you're plagued by scam callers then consider just disconnecting the phone and just use your mobile.

i started to use the caller block list on mobile phone that works perfectly well only an odd number gets through and when it does i just block that as well except one host supply pest call that didnt go down well but made it clear enough im sick of them and dont want them

ive not had any host calls from them since

I like to play with these people occasionally.
I loved the time I had a call asking if I had suffered from work related deafness. I said "Pardon"?
The bloke fell for it 3 times before realising I was making a fool of him!

I've been plagued by sales calls to my mobile ever since I was involved in a car accident last year. Only some of them are from from claims handling companies, there are also ppi calls & other unknown ones so I guess my number has been put on a database & sold to various telesales vermin.

I used to answer them, then I got wise, didn't answer strange numbers, googled the number & if it was telesales I blocked it.

A few weeks ago I registered my mobile number with the TPS & the telesales calls have mostly stopped. It only takes a text to register & it's free. If you are still getting calls after a month you can report the number. If enough people report the number the govt will prosecute the company.

Some one was scamming people and Caller Id was giving My number. Some one called Me and told Me to stop.Call ended up being funny as it started out as, Why are You pestering Me? I am not. Who are You? Not gonna tell. Who are You back? Not gonna tell. It would have made a great joke along the lines of "Who's on first." Went on about 5 minutes that way.

I answer every call I can as it may be a customer, scam calls go straight in the block list, which is huge on my mobile

That only works with UK calls, as posted earlier they have got wise to that and dial from outside the UK where govt have no power to prosecute

Exactly! I've been registered with TPS for years and renewed it online recently - doesn't stop the very helpful man/woman from Microsoft Security in India offering to fix a computer problem for me though......

You can use it to block foreign numbers or "out of area" - I'm guessing you don't get many punters with a 0161 area code code for instance? Or "withheld numbers"

We find blocked numbers cause all sorts of problems. Often a depot or a driver will have number withheld and then they can't speak to someone to arrange a collection or delivery. Then the customer is yelling at us for delays - can't win!
