I found this example of using a door blank.

This is what i was going to suggest but I couldn't voice it particularly well.

Stick on rather than cut out to make the 'panels' and where you need to cut through to make holes for glass, fully frame it and seal that and then the core wont matter as it is not exposed to the weather. I think that should work with the solid core you have planned once it has had a good coat of a decent under and top coat.

Part 2

The original tiles in the vestibule are gone and replaced by the same ones I ripped out of the porch.

Luckily there are still a couple of suppliers making the same size tiles.

Just took delivery of nearly 500 tiles for just this 1.5 SQM area. Laying these won't be fun.

Anyway it will serve as an education as to whether or not I take it right throughout the hallway. My Mrs wants me to do this.

I just think from aesthetic point of view if you run right through with matching authentic old tiles, the grey marble or whatever it is might look naff.

The new tiles are for this bit which still has the 80s tiles.

Matches the front door step, and to retile this area would cost £1500 in tiles alone so will stay put.

Have a look further back in the thread, the grey steps stones have been there since before the porch was built.

Slightly different, but I bought a house in the early 90s. Stripped out the naff carpet in the downstairs rooms, then the even worse Lino to discover a superb solid block parquet style floor , cleaned sanded and waxed it, everyone that saw it loved it. Sold the place to a friend and the first thing his then wife demanded was carpet over the top.

Got round to starting this job today.

Checked I had enough tiles, a few still in the boxes, all ok there.

Ripping the old tiles up.

That went fairly easily.

Getting all the old grout up was a pita and took hours.

Sealer now on, self leveling compound tomorrow.

Bugger, I got a couple of leaks despite putting in a bit of caulk. Luckily I bought a second bag.
