lads in the first picture the root is coming off the bottom tig,these to me are hardest. the challange is to keep everything going on high up on the root face,in my case this involves dipping wire in from the top centre, of the puddle, if the power and angle are right you can hang around a bit, its like dip dip forward trying to move the heat off the pool. always watch for the edges breaking, there wont always be a visible keyhole. f/j

these are the bottom and top of hotpass and filler, lads i know it sounds naff but i have found dead bottom with water its hard to judge just by looking under.the bottom filler pic is only partially ground. my approach is to burn the hotpass at the same amps as the rest say 90, up centre l/r tight in the v nice and slow. f/j

the tracks on the hotpass of this butt are just a little deeper than i would like, preferably flatter and the filler run would be the same up centre l/r, instead i went l pause r pause washing across the middle.heres the finished spool f/j

Good stuff as usual f/j and, good description if no keyhole is evident, many give up at the loss of the keyhole, I use a similar method as you do, with one exception, I push a little more rod through, just to make sure I have reasonable root pene build up. Too much, and lots of wee soldiers for hanging yer jacket on

When your running these roots in where do you feed the filler into, Im guessing into the side of the pool, when I had a stab, I fed my filler in the root gap under the pool, (because it was easy) but ended with far too much material being added... with coat hooks to boot...

Best to hit top center of weld pool Snowie, with suffice push to make sure of decent wedding ring, you run the risk of lack off root side wall pene hitting in from the side. If welding H/V for example, and gap is suffice, I've seen the day of feeding the wire through the gap to make sure I catch rear root face, bit difficult when welding s/s if purged, have the purge tape to contend with, also creep.

So feeding through the root gap is Ok then???, Im a bit red mist with the TIG and once im going its filler in No dip just crack on, bad habbit for open pipe root im guessing, TBH most of what iv done has been ickle boilers, with a closed root 30 degree prep, all the fire tubes are reamed so its only firebox/smokebox plates etc all in 1G.

Fook oche ok then. And i will state NOW, I am no expert, although I worked with a good all round welder who put me thought the ropes with walking da ******* cup, we were doing 316 s/s u/v filtration units, definitely quicker than dab dab methods, point is, I did get a hang of it to a degree, just seemed alien to what I had been doing as the norm for years!! A tad simpler for downhand butts, a good technique required for zooming around tube.

We never used gas lens, just the norm tig head setup, yer correct tho, sit the wire in and, walk the cup, left to right, left to right. Easier to do with flexi head than fixed head (my thoughts only) when welding tube/pipe. Actually job we were making, was for yon Al-Burj hotel in Dubia, ye ken the sail one?

Hmmm I actualy couldnt get the walk at all tell I tried with a gas lens found the shape and the Rad made it come together, Its a bit of a marathon technique tho...

Yep a definite knack to walking the cup. V-butt pipe is fine when you can wedge ceramic against each side of vee while putting in the root where as, welding scalloped thin wall pipe, works well going around the throat, then skites off at the loin area.

Lot of care has to be taken when washing in the sides of face, to make sure of good side wall fusion on plate and pipe, witnessed a few cracked coupons if not washed and fused properly.

I remember a few years back we had a young app who only knew how to walk the cup, trying to have him weld conventionally was a task! Good technique to master tho.......another option.

snowy i differ from runnach in that i tend to dip one side and wash rod and pool across to fuse the other.those sharks teeth are a pain to fix. i think i mentioned before i have no experience of cup walking other than working with a couple of very good hands,their caps are beautiful and they are fast ones a sterling man runnach. f/j

Evening f/j, this is a significant point to welding, one can train a lad up by demonstration, then the individual sorts out the various idiosyncrasies to get a decent result, this said, although methods are not way out from the norm, say using his feet! Not had a chance recently to do much welding meself, been busy with conducting weld test and, stuck behind a pc. Lad from your work, i think you mean from Stirling?

that is what i meant runnach thanks, the guy in question has two talents, welding and moaning i was working in a brewery a few years ago when a guy came up and asked me if i knew him ,i said i did and he said the big c##t does more greeting than a christmas card. im sure thats not new to you,but it cracked me up. f/j out on site.

Good stuff with the pics f/j, majestic to look at a new installation, with neat fab/weld gantries, walkways ect........engineering at its best!

I use the phrase often, new group arrives, take a few days, but not long to suss out personalities, of course there is always one, "Ah you must be a 365 day Christmas card" puzzled look, "always greeting" met with loud laughter from the norm lads.

i hope you didn,t miss the big wump of wood lads, runnach i think i read you were on holiday if so enjoy. as mentioned before lads this site work ain,t new to me, its as much a pain in the ar## as ever weather crap, wish you were here f/j heres a couple 2g, tig root filler 4 stringer cap, i know but thats me ,why use 3 when 4 will do.

Unfortunately I returned Tuesday morning f/j, a bit of work, plenty of playtime, but to frigging hot! Which reminds me, glad katfish is based in Melbourne beach, beats me how guys survive welding in 90F plus degree heat.

Back to you're post, did you charge the customer for the extra stringer f/j?? Quality stuff again ma man!!
