everyone at my school starts off with 6013's and i never asked why but my instructor tells everyone they are the most easy to learn on

People will tell you one rod is best. It is really personal preference (outside of apps that need specific weld properties.)

I would suggest trying different types and brands. 6013's are real easy to use in most apps.

I kept an eye on ebay for deals on rods. Picked up several boxes for only a few dollars. Even with shipping, they were still a bargain. Most were under $20 for 5lbs. Gives me lots of rods to practice with.

Rods as shenion said should be an application issue rather than preference on ease of use, a 6013 is a good all position low carbon rod, fine for everyday use, a 7018 has 10K of extra strength and is also hydrogen controlled, but theres zero point in using it on unless the steal is of similar yeild...

Rod choice comes from experience, materials used or a specific instruction from a WPS, theres little point in choosing from a very long list unless you understand the application.

what sort of amps you using f/j. i was doing some guard rails at work the other day, 100mm diameter 3mm thick. bevelled edges to about 30 degrees. 1mm gap, used 2.5 6013's.. the stick doesnt actuall have amp settings but it has all the rod sizes on one side and approximate material thickness on the other, i was thinking between 80-100 amps. that about right. had a go at 2 joints then got the mig out lol

plus f/j i was welding some 16mm plate, fillet welds using 3.2 6013's set at the top end of 3.2 setting. couldnt get a nice bead. should i have used 4.0 mm rods, i had bevelled edges 40 degrees approx

scotty 100 amps sounds a little high for 2.5 6013, 70 75 amps is nearer the mark, try a 2.5 gap and no chamfer on your 4" guard rails, all you really want is a sound base for a capping run, a few holes won,t matter in the root, and you will get more strength than simply butting edge to edge, best of luck f/j. heres a few more from the shop.

gavuk, simon. thanks for your interest, most caps are welded with around 95 amps, for a 3.25 rod, i have a pic somewhere that shows my weave approach ill dig it out but its like a shallow arc in my case right to left always on the rise, heres a few more f/j

Triffic as usual f/j, looks interesting work mate, conical reducers and Tee's, out of interest, is the pipe system subjected to inspection, dye/pen, hydraulic ect??

runnach, the question you ask is usually the automatic, response of any professional welder, as an instructor i can see that you would be interested in code etc of any given weld, to me this never really takes priority, obviously if an x/ray quality bead is required then as the welder i expect every effort on the fitters part to help. on this particular job there was 10 pc x/ray on these stick root filler and cap welds, the medium pressure steam was all tig root through to cap,this and the ch/mo high temp steam was 100 pc. x/ray. all welds were visually inspected by the german engineers involved. i always try to steer clear of the policing end of this as a trade, i have some views in this regard that would be certain to offend someone, thats not why im here. thanks for your interest mate,you also arsoniste. what im saying may become clearer later on. f/j heres the rest of that spool.

Lovely welding F/J ,I am a pipe welder , never used Tig on root before ,im very interested as to your set up! Ceramic size, tungsten size , amps and such , do you have a foot pedal or button on torch. I normally weld up to 6" pipework with 2.5 rod 6013 2.5 gap . Have welded S/steel pipe 10" purged the work and tigged up the joints and was amazed at the way the gap closed, is this why you use 4mm gap? Nice to see your work on here , very immpressed ! Thanks
