oh, confusing stuff lol, but i suppose if you were properly trained you would know what they mean, im only 17 so no welding qualifications yet unfortunately, goin for a nvq level 2 and 3 in the autumn so that will be fun lol

Exemplar for those interested attempting pipe welding details:

4" lcs, 5>5.5 wt. 60 degree incl angle for prep. Root face core thickness of rod as a guide 2.5mm. Root gap (for me) 2.5mm. Pics showing tacks feathered back, keyhole at end of tack, for running over and off tack. Detail of grinding back root run when complete, don't go nuts with the grinding, to much thinning out will cause burn through on reinforcement/cap run. Detail of root penetration, not too clear really, should have wire brushed priot to taking pic! Finally pic viewing reinforcement/capping run.

Rods: NuFive cellulosic for rooting only, amperage setting for various diameters on box, me using 2.5mm 50 amps does me fine. Lincoln easyarc or easyweld 6013 rutiles for reinforcement/capping run. I would suggest 2.5 for cap if at a learning stage, 3.2 when confidence kicks in, just means less stop starts while completing final run.

Ps, I prefer to grind back root using 4" cutting disc, as opposed to 4" normal carborundum grinding disc.

Actually I haven't Snowcat, Arc lads next week, so when I get them up and running I'll give it a bash. Maybe have to do a search on techniques for a wee clue tho, but I suppose if all looks well, root, reinforcement and, coupons don't break or show minor cracks, I may be on the correct route? let you know how I get on.

there was some stuff on ukw about it, both hands and a welders mate to drop the amps as you close the keyhole..... Id ask more questions on there but I have a fealing it was Matts knowitall mate who wrote the thread.......

Here y'are Snowy. Spot of stoving I did today while making a lock box for a storage unit. Thin galv sheet (2mm?), so used a 6013, 1.6mm rod, possibly old BOC Saffire, don't know any more. Elec neg, about 30A. Keep ahead of the slag!!!

And please, don't mention the inclusion 4/5 of the way up, it wasn't a critical weld

We have a cracking machine for prepping the pipe, does plate too up to around 20mm thick, If I have lads wasting pipe, I pull the fuse and make them grind and file hehe, gets the message over rapid! I actually recommend 2.5 for pipe we use, but if I have had a hard day, like say, 5>6 runs to do, I use 3.2 to get around quicker, just getting lazy I guess!

Looking good Simon, was this the dock area, probably inclusion enhance by salt water environment?

My company had to send out a team of welders and fabricators over to go and fit some strengthening gussets all over the place.....all MMA work, 100 ft up in the air, next to a huge Fyord, with about -6 degrees wind blasting at you all day. It was in winter time, so they hardly got any sunlight, the hotel was in the middle of nowhere and the beer was about £8 a glass It was horrible, I hated every minute of it.

Your story reminds me of how I got out of being sent to a god awe full place, twas at the time, may be different now for the better? Be around late 70's, had to go down to Barrow-Furness to do a mod on job I did for British Oceanic, manipulator arm on one there manned subs when they were used in the beginning of our offshore oil industry, hated the place!

1991, working for a different company making various internal stuff for Trident subs, job complete in house, I was told I was being sent there for installation (Barrow-Furness again), not happy "I'm no going get stuffed" told to go upstairs to meet with the suits. Hard time I had too, told to fill out the security form or there is the door. Once security form is complete, it is then sealed in an envelope for Vickers/MOD eyes only. Usual gov stuff, what colour of pants you wearing, mother/father history ect, then came to a point where I was asked if I was affiliated to any political party YES says me, wrote down Greenpeace signed and sealed in envelope. Week or two later told I had been knocked back! Trafalgar launch day, who was there buzzing about in their RHIB's.........Greenpeace no less. Redundancies came up soon after this, I took voluntary, left the game for a bit to smell the coffee again.

lads i find it hard to explain these butts but ill have a go. i got a chance to get some shots of a 45 deg tig root i think its 10 inch.the first pic should give an idea of angle of tungsten, up and forward. again 4mm gap and a small land. 90 amps is a good starter but you will probably need higher. i keep raising to compensate for closure.i also use 2.5 filler. as you see in the cap i got stiff couldn,t even face a 5g so i did it in 4 quarters. f/j

Nice wedding rings there with the roots f/j. One quick question, do you use a flexi head on tig torch? Triffic bit of kit, I actually toil now if having to make my way around pipe using standard tig head.

whats stoving?? lol
im keen to get my arc welds as good as those but i can only get rutile 6013 rods if that makes any difference? its all that is available in my area, most welders havnet heard of 7013 or cellulose rods, neither had i before i came on this forum to be honest lol

runnach i havn.t had a chance to use a swivel head for a long time, it would be a welcome change. dave stove welding is downhill 12 to 6 on pipe, usually with 6010 or i think they sometimes use 6011. these are cel rods, if you use one you will know,these things are great for conventional root also, thats 6 to 12 uphill. any caps i have posted are 6013 and runnach used 7018 l/h. i dont think you will get a better weave with 10s but if you do keep with them and please post a pic.this is rolled, 6010 bohler cel. f/j

Hi f/j, I was testing out 7 guys today MMA process, I would have been over the moon if their quality of welds had been even 3/4 close to the quality you produce, however to be fair, the gents are employed H&V industry, so some may not have fired up in anger since their last test 3 years ago! Also some installations now employ securing using mechanical joint systems, mannisman or close to this. O&A tomorrow, should be interesting too.

I had a go at stoving on tuesday for a laugh, hit and miss for first attemp, right swine trying to keep in front of the slag! I'll have another bash next week.

As for swivel head, geeeeeez, best invention since the microwave
