I like the home made pallet stand for painting, I often do that for car parts to save using all the bench space up

I asked a question a while back about the original colour of Fortis vices - think I've answered it myself. I've just had the 2 main halves of a Fortis with the twin swivelling in the electrolysis vice and there are a couple of patches of paint similar to British Racing Green left. As others have said, the casting is a lot rougher than many - certainly than the 2 Record vices I've done previously, a 112 and a 114.

Also, cleaning revealed what I take to be a QC stamp and a date (11.53) on one end of the fixed jaw.

Thinking about paint - I see Toolstation are selling a Rustins water based metal paint. Has anyone experience of this?

I spotted this in my local hardware shop for the first time today..............I've only been going there for 11 years! but in my defence they have recently refurbished that part of the store and moved the tools section up stairs.

I asked the manager about me making a bespoke steel display stand to their requirements in exchange for this original Record vice display stand...........he's going to think on it.

It is a lovely thing and I think I see where you're going with it.

If I was that manager I'd be wondering; if you can build a better stand than this old thing, why do you want it...

If you can bag that Record stand for less the £100 get it.

One down here is a terrible state went for £200 back in March.

The department manager knows exactly what he has got and he did inform me that he has turned down several cash offers. I asked him why and the answer was actually rather simple and very much to my liking. He said, if he sold this stand he'd only have to go out and buy a new shop display stand to replace it, and what is available these days is vastly inferior in quality. That's when I got my phone out and showed him some of my work and that's when he said he'd seriously think about it ....... after I gave him one of my "give away" promotional stylus retractable ballpoint pens, pocket note pad and a key ring bottle opener.

Arrived today, a Dinky Vice. In surprisingly good condition, may just brighten up the plain steel and leave the painted parts don't want to lose the sticker.

You've got to save it, the poor thing must be dying of shame with all that tat stacked on it!

That's seriously good news. Sounds like you're gonna get yourself a deal. Never mind how much that stand might be "worth", they've got to be as rare as hens teeth and for a vice collector, the perfect display.

I bought this off the bay for the youngest daughters woodworking bench, when I get around to make it

It's nice and dinky, 6" across the jaws. The daughter (8) and I took the dog for a walk and discussed the merits of full and sympathetic restoration of antique vices. I had to the distinct feeling that she didn't really care that much!

So rather than sand blast it and paint it afresh I thought I would give it the once over with a cup brush and get rid of rust, white paint and loose paint and maybe just give it a coat of boiled linseed oil?

It needs a bit of fine wire wool on the handle, slides etc. but what do you think? Just protect it from rust and leave it like it is below or all the paint off and a full resto?

I'm tempted by the "hipster industrial" look although the daughter has no intention of growing a beard or getting tattoos just yet

Yes - looks pretty good. Just want to take my time disassembling it to avoid any nasties - my previous projects have been on larger vices.

I was lucky enough to find a Parkinson Swivel jaw vice too on my recent foray south - the one with the rotating back jaw, fixed with a pin. pics to follow.
