Do you guys think that back piece is definitely a mod? It doesn’t look like an actual repair since there is nothing broken, and looking at the slide, there is no indication of any hammer marks anywhere else.

The picture in the 1935 B&H catalogue only shows a regular No.25, but I figure maybe they went a little extra for the biggest model? (The biggest in that series)

What you want is a Woden floor vice. Have at it like the guy in the silhouette with his heavy hammer. I seem to recall they made another model which had an anvil and cast wheels on the end.

Nope, that's still quite a lightweight compared to the big chipping vices or the shipyard vices.

So in our tiny workshop we have 4 vices all ready to use! Plus a pile for sale, its an addiction

My Son has started buying them cleaning them up and selling at auto jumbles as he is a poor school boy with a fetish for collecting Britool, you can guess the rest he just bought a Record 75 but is keeping it!

Surely if he wants to sell them for a profit then ebay is the place to do it? Old vices go for silly money on there sometimes

He is looking at that but school work and looking for an apprenticeship is getting in the way at the moment, postage is key we find if you post they sell better, we found including the mounting bolts helps sell them at the Jumbles as people feel they are getting something extra and we have loads of free ones! He just need to get ahead with repairs then he will try a few on Ebay.

More pictures of a No.28. Dieselkid 63, you do resize the No.28 wighs 82 kg? I don’t know about your athletic prowess but I usually don’t even consider picking that sort of weight up, let alone “just grab it by the tommy bar”

Put my 24 back together today.

Confused as whilst everything seems to be working, when using the QR it sets itself backinto position most of the time as it should

But it sometimes goes into this position-

I can’t see another way to reassemble the QR mech.. baffled.

Also there’s a washer that sits on the end of the leadscrew, what does it do? Seems to just slide on and has freedom to slide up and down slightly, unless I’ve gone wron somewhere

You have't done anything wrong, that think washer that floats around at the back is there to stop the slide coming out of the body, it's basically a stop. It butts up against the cast piece that is behind the half-nut. That's why you have to half-assemble the vice and THEN slip the washer in, otherwise you'll find it will stop you inserting the slide into the body, the same way it stops it coming out once everything is assembled. I used to be confused about that too.

Just seemed odd how it doesn’t sit into a groove or anything.

When the Release lever is in its most clockwise position, the nut is fully engaged with the screw, you rotate it counterclockwise to disengage, right? So, when the lever is NOT in that seemingly ''odd'' position, it follows that the nut must not be fully engaged with the screw thread. Now the lever isn't supposed to be that far to the right, as you've realized. To adjust this, you can rotate the toothed ''nut'' that the spring engages, to adjust the ''home'' position of the lever in respect to the flat bar. If you look at it it's like a ratchet strap, or the pawls in a bicycle freewheel, it can rotate one way but does't go back. I find it odd that this would have moved from it's original position, or maybe the spring has lost tension, or you disassembled it? (I have tapped the pin out to disassemble that part a few times)

I just realized it's not a No.28, since No.28 and No.27 (they didn't make No.26) were discontinued LONG before they switched from the bulbous screw end to the cylindrical end on your vice.

That bit on the back turned out a nasty surprise. Not a collectors piece, but it works perfectly, and will never EVER break in that area, with that super thick, nice ductile piece of steel holding the broken piece down. The steel piece is held to the body with 6 large bolts, drilled into a part of the casting (the side walls) which are so strong under the clamping force that the holes are really not gonna cause any issues...at least it looks like it to me. Apparently it was owned by a guy who did machining, who was the neighbour of the guy I bought it from, before he died and his wife cleared the shop. I don’t think the abuse is the machinist’s handy work, they usually treat tools nicely, although I suspect he repaired it.

Your lever, my best guess is the flat bar is not sitting into the “cradle” piece properly? Can you take pictures from the under side? Try to cycle it while upside down, may give you a better idea?

Here's a No.23 I bought not too long ago. It was in very good condition, just neglected and a horrendous black paint. The handle is perfectly straight, jaws are perfect, no hammering on the slide or anywhere else. I didn't wire wheel or anything, just scraped off the old paint with a screwdriver, hand wire brushed and oiled it. Took a while, but it was simple, still has a bit of rust but it's very smooth.
