Lots of advice'll be along soon, I'm sure - but meantime the spring in pic 3 looks pretty ripe and I'd exercise care when freeing off/dismantling.

I had one like that! It didn't have Record on it though so maybe it was a bit older?
It was my mates that I said I would look after for him, 15 years later he got himself a decent garage to put it in so I sadly gave it back

Cheers guys, i was careful with the spring, all good and no eyes put out.

I won't be selling this as i need a capable vice and this more than fits the bill. I am on the lookout for a workable / period correct swivel base. If anyone has one I am willing to pay a fair price.

I got my hands on this old vice.
No makers name cast into the body, but I have found the following details stamped onto the top of the movable jaws.

T Syer & co London Patent 102N.
Hi this looks a bit like my vice , does it slide and lock with a flick of the lever or does it have a screw, if it slides it may be an Entwisle and Kenyon Steelrack , it would in that case have a cam lock operation , more pics pls
What I have found is this. (cut and pasted)

Thomas J Syer of London started in business as cabinet makers about 1880. By 1888, the company was styled T Sayer & Co. and described as ironmongers, patent vice and improvement tool depot, cabinet and technical workshop, office and shop fitters. By 1911, the business was toolmakers.


There is not much information Out there, but I was wondering if any one here had more information.

Nitromors ain't what it used to be before they messed with the active ingredient(s).

Thanks for that , elbow grease is working , would these have been painted or oiled when new, also how old is this likely to be ? Also would it have had a captive tommy bar in the clamp screw ?

There should be a tommy bar in the clamp, you could make one from a long bolt. When it was in use they were generally not painted, they were designed for metal bashing so paint would not have lased long!

You could use a blowlamp & a scraper to strip that but take care because it will likely have lead paint on it! A simpler method would be electrolysis, just score the paint to let the current get to the steel in a few places & you'll find the paint will fall off it! That will also leave you a nice rust free surface for oil or wax.

If you have a Karcher pressure washer, they do a sand blaster attachment which works even with their more basic models. Useful if you have other small stuff to do in the future. A bit slow so not much fun for bigger things. You use very dry bagged builders sand (must be dry) which gets expensive for larger areas.
Safer than sand/air blasting, but you tend to get soaked....wellies and goggles a must.
You can also get an attachment for petrol pressure washers. Being more powerful they work quicker but go through sand faster....a lot faster.

Well the paint is nearly all off , can't find a makers mark, apart from the paint it looks almost unused, have found that there are 2 through holes in the clamp screw boss so now I don't think there was a to my bar fitted, it's definitely all forged steel not cast, the main screw nut is brazed into the bit that goes through the rear jaw, any ideas where and when this would have been made, ? Have googled but no answers found,

Don't know the size off the top of my head, here's one I used to own, it had IR 34 in the casting as though it only fitted this vice but am not sure and will be put right I am sure

I had this old stand for a flypress that was made up yonks ago out of an offcut of road plate and some 2" waterpipe, time to repurpose . Decided to bolt on a decent sized record vice and as a good measure a pipe vice to upgrade my old yard mobile vice. Plenty sturdy
