I have the old record75, which Im very fond of. It fully covers all my needs, and its got charm and patina in rich amount. I have a small workshop filled with to many projekts...promised I wouldnt start collecting and bla bla bla...

I actually never found out when my Record 75 is from. I wonder if anyone can tell?
Its got "Steel" on the side, like the 112.

Found this site when researching a vice I had bought. Good to know that there others out there who have the same disability as myself, namely the inability to walk away from a metal tool with movable jaws which are used to hold an object firmly in place while work is done on it, typically attached to a workbench. This one of mine, a Peter Wright type vice, no makers marks but a mighty fine piece of kit. There are more, alot more and pictures will hopefully follow.

I counted up my vice collection yesterday & got to 16 plus another one I bought today. It doesn't seem that many until you count up their value - £1500 would be a conservative estimate for the collection!

Of course I didn't pay that for them, the most I've ever paid was £50 for a mint Record no 6 which is my everyday vice. I normally give less than £30, which is cheap as vices over here are normally more expensive as there are fewer around.

I have a Peter Wright as well though I can't find any makers mark, but it could be buried under paint!

There is a thread somewhere on the board where another member has refurbished a Peter Wright vice, check it out.

Been looking out for one of these for ages & spotted this one locally.

There's a nice Record No 74 auto vice buried under that black paint!

Some money changed hands & it came home with me!

It has had little abuse, the jaws are good, the handle straight & the mini anvil unmarked!

The only thing that lets it down is that the swivel base is missing. If I cant source one it will be an easy enough thing to fabricate.

I got it for £40, tried for less but the seller wouldn't budge. They are very scarce over here so I didn't want to miss it for a few £££.

You forgot about the adapter that screws into a cylinder head!

The stud, wing nut & soft jaws can be easily made, the base will be a bit more difficult.

Anyone know what thread the base centre bolt is? It looks like 1/2" dia unc or whitworth.

I wonder if it would be possible to adapt a base from another record?

This is one of the the three record 74s that I have. This was bought as a donor vice for a pound or two, all I wanted was the swivel base for a much better vice. This one had been sorely abused and the static jaw had been very crudely wielded and the moveable jaw was no longer attached. There was nothing wrong with the thread or the jaws so after a little drilling, filing, grinding and some swearing this usable vice was put together and bolted to a bench I use out side when the British weather will allow. It has been out for 3 or 4 years now, gets a lot of use and has yet to let me down. The renovated vice lives in the workshop, or shed, and has seen very little service.

Now to bring up a rather touchy subject. Which way round should the holding bolts go? Nuts top or bottom? I say they should be on top as you can see if the nut is about to fall off.

Either/either. I usually have the nuts up top, (mainly due to using coach bolts with the square under the head), but either way goes for normal bolts.
