very nice --- Governor brand in case anyone missed that -- and the symbol is the old steam engine governor- the two balls that swing out with speed of rotation and close a valve - it's a great marking

Governor had their own catalogue of tools but didn't (I believe) make their own -this is v like Parkinson Handy early version - so maybe over 100 years old?

Picked up a later model Wadkin Universal Ball and Socket today to go with my early one. This one doesn't use white metal in the socket. Will post more pics after work.

A few comparison pics of the old style on the right and new style on the left, there is an intermediate style between these which they have in a back room at the science museum.


First mention of the universal vice that I can find is in 1918


This undated picture shows many of the old style and new style in use at the Wadkin factory alongside some Parkinson vises.

In this catalogue it's been renamed a tool and cutter vice.


This picture is from the 1957 Wadkin catalogue and is the most recent time I can find it for sale.

Here's the Science Museum intermediate design, it's still the old style vice but the ball socket it now a two piece design without the white metal bearing surface.

And like the works picture -- looks like the front two operatives are using large (size 8 or so?) Parkinson Perfect early version and is that something like a Woden swivel behind?

On the newer version -- what's the bulge to one side near the tommy bar and the hole in line with it and bar on the jaw - some kind of preset, or for extra rigidity?

The bulge is for the bolts of the retaining plate for the main screw (assuming I understood you correctly).
The bar is to stop the front jaw spinning around, on the older style this was performed by a key running in a groove on the side of the slide. It does also have a pin (missing on mine) in the end of the bar to stop it opening too far, I've not checked how long the screw actually is.

I was able to resolder with special iron and iron electrodes the broken piece and the missing part which I remade with a flat iron of the same thickness. I waited for better days in outside temperature to repaint the parts, I took the opportunity to also do the Woden.

I have a question, can someone tell me the dimension of the screws (the Ø and the pitch) for the jaw plate bolts and front backet screws for the Woden 190 / 7A. thank you.

I like everything you have done here Patrick - a magic transformation, great welding skills (in English we separate soldering - low temperature, like tin, silver, then brazing - medium temp copper alloys, then welding as I believe you have done at a high temperature iron, nickel base etc --- yes, easier to call everything soudage, but as I see you are highly skilled, I thought you might be interested).

I also like the paint colour and the way you have left the bare metal -- formidable

Interesting that the last two illustrations refer to it as a 'tool and cutter vice' -- I suppose for manual filing in the tool room, but it could also be set up on a jig for a repeat angle against a grinding wheel? especially if 'upside down'.


ps off topic -- I have noted that Parkinson's seemed reluctant to cast in their full name (or often anything at all) on the Handy range of vices --- well there's one on ebay with a partly legible cast in name at present advertised as a 'Mandy Vice, Made in England'

That is a great shade of green for a vice.

Could you tell us what the colour designation is, and the paint manufacturer ?

to solder the parts I bought electrodes for melting (see model in the photo). normally with these electrodes there is no need to heat the part beforehand (information taken from the manufacturer). but as a precaution I still preheated them slightly. then I welded with small weld beads and hammered them immediately. the pieces were of course chamfered on each side. it took me a whole afternoon. I let it cool all night before working on it.

for the paint: I have already put an after and I bought gray and green hammered paint from lidl, I mixed them, I took a ruler that I put in the paint pot (10 cm gray and added 4 cm of green).

Thanks for posting the period adverts/pics etc, stuff like that is just great to see. That works pic is also very interesting, particularly with the old Parky's in shot. Is that swivelling vice at the top of the shot a Fortis maybe (just going off the anvil on it) ?

I reckon it's just manual filing in the tool room, surely anything used on a machine would have graduations to make repeatable setting easier?

Shame the 'Mandy Vice' has had such a hard life, I guess they must have used the slide as anvil for a sledge hammer.

The body does look very Fortis like, I love the range of eras in that picture, you have the old two part Parky's, the early Wadkin (from around 1918), the late Wadkin, and the possible Fortis. Those Parky's are likely 40+ years old at the time of the picture.

Yes I agree, the range of era's is cool. It just shows how well kit was made & lasted then.
Is that a later Parky at top left, can't see the front of it though to see if it's a bolt through or smooth fronted (as I have) type. Although the more I look could it perhaps be a Paramo, i'm not sure ?
