Found this on FB for £5 and simply could not resist it!!!!!!
Can anyone tell me if the bracket holding the quick release bar under the vice is supposed to be proud of the bottom of the vice? Doesn't seem right as it won't sit on a flat surface?
It's a Samsonia Perfect Vice model J.
Not as heave as it looks surprisingly....
My Woden of similar size seems heavier?

It's steel that's why it'll be lighter.
MattF is of course correct, so yep the bracket has been put on wrong, it should be the other way up.

Wow the workshop picture takes me back. Worked in HMNB Factory bench fitting for around 6 months. Everyone had their own bench and protected it like their baby, never touch anther mans tools, and never use his vice!. The heights of the vices may be surprising to some. We were always told that to be comfortable the jaws of the vice should be at elbow height, and if you have ever spent several hours a day filing you soon realise that a low vice results in an aching back and a sore neck. Where are the tins of Golden Virginia rolling tobacco and the tea mugs though?

Spot on, looking closely someone has replaced the lever bar and must have put it back wrong!

Just waiting for the day I have time to strip and clean it now. It appears to have been a bargin!

looked over at the US garage vises website -- some of the prices! - a Prentiss vice catalogue just sold for $600 - some some of the 'baby' (2in jaws) Wiltons (like a Czech York vice) go for 4 figures as do many of the big fellas

$600 for a catalogue !!! Flipping heck. Don't get me wrong I really like all that type of stuff but that's (IMO) crackers. Got to say that sort of price for a vice is also crazy as far as i'm concerned. I'd be frightened to use it. It's the point where folk start buying things as "investments" & then it's no longer a thing you actually use & it has to be kept utterly pristine & worried about.
Don't get me wrong if it floats peoples boat & they enjoy it, cool, but it's not for me.

Here we go again - something a bit different ----- Wilson, Colt, Dohm - all the same family of companies (I think) from London.
First a little one marked Dohm I got a few years ago about 2in wide jaws - sitting on top of a mystery vice (the red one, which is itself atop a Record no 2)

a much bigger vice marked Wilson - this one not quick release, but also available as such, I hope he doesn't mind me copying this to here, but he's done a great job, and shows other pictures
