Were the bolts provided precision ground with minimal threads exposed through the bench, or of the general purpose type, with threads within the shear plane ?

Not ground but made to size in the dockyard factory, only enough tread to get nut on with two threads clearance.Were the bolts provided precision ground with minimal threads exposed through the bench, or of the general purpose type, with threads within the shear plane ?

Does this count as a vice? Possibly it's a bit specialist, but others may find it of interest. Designed to enable you to work on your bicycle an a variety of heights or positions. I was using it today to fit rod brakes to my Rudge Whitworth, but it is pictured here holding my rat bike assembled from bits and pieces.

you have to get credit for any 'vice' used to fit rod brakes on a rudge, and your rat is fine
My youngest grandchild of 4 is mad on cycling so I've had to service my old road bike (Sun, Worksop frame, campag gears) which I put together late 1970s for free from scrap -- runs sweetly now.

Thanks, the rat was a donor bike destined for the scrap yard, but it has rather nice red and gold pinstriping and so was saved. It looks better than it did.
Hello all
I'm soon-ish going to putting my Parky No6 back together. Normally i'd just bung a bit of 3in1 Oil on the thread etc to lubricate it, but is that actually the best option ?
Here's a pic' of what I have in, any suggestions as to what's best? Also what did Parkinsons use, anyone know ?
Opinions welcomed.

I like Moly grease, and have also added some anti-seize compound.

I remember unpacking 'preserved' bearings that had been packed in grease which had turned to the constancy of toffee, it took hours and loads of carbon tetrachloride.
Tend to grease anything moving that needs disassembly to get to as it tends to hang about longer, tolerates dust/dirt, change in temperature, and does its job with minimal maintenance. Oil has better cooling properties, cleaner than grease and is good for bearings, oiled bearings can last twice as long as greased ones.
I lightly grease the vice screw, and oil all the accessible moving parts, squirting oil in the appropriate hole from time to time. I use GP or bicycle grease and motor oil, 3 in 1 is too expensive, but never WD40, it’s not an effective lubricant. A light oil is also great for cleaning and removing old oil and grease.

My old 74 died today. I'll admit to swinging on the handle with a cheater bar, but if you look carefully you can see rust in the fracture so it was an accident waiting to happen. Luckily, no one was hurt, and nothing was damaged - except for the vice.

Yep, the one I keep on my outside bench. It had been abused by a previous owner and I only bought it for the swivel base to fit to another 74. However, with a bit of fettling I got it usable and its been outside for about 6 years giving good service. I've now replaced the movable jaw from another 74 so I've a useable outside vice.

Thank you. The bench was a belated Valentine from my other half. It had been marked up for scrapping but its proved to be very useful. See page 187 for more details.I like the drop down handle idea on your outside bench.
