The step present on the front of the Handy vice is I believe to stop filing swarf falling onto the surface where the spindle contact the front face of the sliding jaw.

On the subject of rust removal. I've been restoring another Rudge Whitworth bicycle which had been left for many years in a wet shed and was heavily rusted. I want to keep it as original as possible so the rust needed to be cleanly removed. Over the years I've used all sorts but the best I've used has been Evapo-Rust. Soak for about 24 hours to get back to bare metal. It can be used multiple times, but obviously looses its rust removing properties the more it's used. It can also be disposed of very easily as it is non toxic.

Sounds like it's just citric.

Was just surfing the bay of evil, and noticed this unusual vice with 4" jaws. Here is a screen shot. I like the colour, but the rear jaw casting looks like a piece has broken off. Anyone know the manufacturer ?

I think i've asked previously but thought I might again just in case.
Does anyone have a Paramo Vice catalogue they can scan in or any other info' on their models etc? I've looked on Graces Guide etc but an actual catalogue would be really great to see. I've seen them for Parkinson, Record & Woden (mainly those kindly supplied by CwazyWabbit on here) & those are fascinating, but wondered if any were out there for Paramo ?

Isn't that the same stuff as in tea?

Tried acetic the other month, (white vinegar). Found that much nicer than citric. Leaves an aged appearance too, as a bonus.

Yeah, but vinegar will then eat the steel after the rust, and stinks far worse than citric!

Not sure I'd want a 100l tub of vinegar in the workshop!

Quick internet tells me tannic converts rust to black rather than removes?

Citric will give you shiny steel down into every pit.

I don't mind the smell of it, & obviously one should be monitoring anything they're derusting, & neutralise it once done.

Besides, it appears milder on the piece, yet more effective than citric, IMHO.

I'll check it out, always willing to try new ideas.
I'm out of citric now anyway (well, mostly).
I think the big tub of citric cost me £10 And was enough to make up 200l, although I paid no attention to ratio. Just made it strong! Took rusty steel back to shiny steel in 12-24 hours.
At the strength I had it id expect it to take maybe a 24hr soak, quick rinse and a little wire brush, then another 12hr to have this vice back to 100% zero rust.
Unfortunately I have about 5l of ready mixed stuff left so whatever I choose, I'm buying more!

As kids, we used to play on a disused garage site. With a certain smell to it.

Many years later, I discovered it was gearbox oil, a smell I appreciate now.

Not a bench vice per se, but still a vice and able to be bench mounted. It’s a Stanley No400 miter vise. Tilts through 90deg and rotates through 360. This one is off to a picture framer.
