I don't think mine had a brass release plate.... hmmm, I'll have to dig it out for a look at some point. I don't think the rust on yours is as bad as it looks at first, can't wait to see it done.

I don't think it is either. I had a reasonable look over it before swapping some paper for it but was looking for cracks etc.
Had another look just now and it seems like alot of why its seized may be dirt too.
I'm very much looking forward to sorting it. Apart from tomorrow, I've next week off work too, so I guess I know what I'm doing!
Seller suggested I chrome it.

Oh, I've seen pics of one other with a polished brass front release plate.
Bit showy for military use though

Thought I'd screenshot this split jaw Parkinson on FB marketplace. See if it adds anything new to the discussion.

Also pics of 2 others of interest. The first other one I've seen mentioned before, either on here or on GJ.

The second isn't that unusual apart from the stand, broken unfortunately though. Parkinson stand?

Regarding right place, I think the Viceoholics here would say this was the right thread to chime in on, lol.
We like bike pics on this forum as well. Here's a shot of my 1954 Bantam, sadly, I can't take credit for the restoration, but I have built several bikes in the past. If I was younger I would have looked for a basket case, but I couldn't pass this one up.

My velo is 1954 too. Come to think of it, I think my lawnmower (atco) and my pillar drill (kerry super 8) are 1954 too!
Good decade the 1950s.
Even my kitchen is 1950s (english rose).

That's pretty much what I had planned, just wasn't sure if to use the citric, or replace that step with electrolysis.
I have done a fair bit of citric de rusting recently (every steel part of a 1950s motorcycle). But since then I've also been electroplating stuff (every nut bolt washer and chrome part of a 1950s notorcycle).
That's why I wondered about trying to remove rust that way. Maybe I'll try citric first as it's not line of sight.

A rare one, but apart from the missing jaw, and not one single part still moving, it seems ok. Doesn't seem to have had much abuse.

I just don't want to weaken it. It won't get abused, I use my record 112 for abusive jobs, but it's going to be a reasonable amount of work to sort out so I don't want the dynamic jaw to fall off first time I clamp anything down in it!

I count 20 turns. What is the wire diameter? What is the outer diameter of the spring?
From the other pictures I deduce a length of the coiled part of the spring of something like 60-65mm, is that about correct?

It's odd the way the world works.
I've always loved a good vice. I've always like the vice threads. Started trawling the internet for vives again a week ago.
2 or 3 days ago i saw one of these fortis on ebay (it's still there), but it is expensive and 4 hours away. Thought I'd really like one and unlike all the other vices I'd quite like, this one is different enough for it to actually fulfil a niche my 112 doesn't.
Figured I'd never own one though.
2 days later, today, I go to an autojumble tonlook for old vices, secretly hoping to find a 52 1/2a or a 6" Ajax, but no luck.
This however was there!
Can't be many around so from finding out they exist to finding one randomly for sale in just a couple of days is crazy!

I've seen a few with the holes on the outside of the jaws when you'd think they should be smooth. Is that where somebody has drilled through to mount jaw plates if the original threaded mounts were damaged ??

On the subject of rust removal. I've been restoring another Rudge Whitworth bicycle which had been left for many years in a wet shed and was heavily rusted. I want to keep it as original as possible so the rust needed to be cleanly removed. Over the years I've used all sorts but the best I've used has been Evapo-Rust. Soak for about 24 hours to get back to bare metal. It can be used multiple times, but obviously looses its rust removing properties the more it's used. It can also be disposed of very easily as it is non toxic.

I don't know, but I saw another with more damage in that area too. It looked like the front of the dynamic jaw may have been machined down and smoothed out, accidently going through into the blind drilling.
