I don't like the finish citric acid leaves on the machined surfaces, I prefer the finish from electrolysis and a light rub with wire wool.

Because electrolysis is far more gentle on the piece than citric.
Plus, as Cwazy' says, citric can leave a crappy finish.

What have you against citric?
I thought it worked brilliantly, but I think it's damaged the last piece I did. I did forget about it though and leave it in for a few weeks.

I did all that bike, even the frame. It didnt seem to cause any surface damage at all, or alter the colour etc. It came out looking like fresh new steel. Even down to the very bottom of every rust pit.
But, I then did a kickstart lever with peeling chrome. The citric seemed to get under than keeping chrome and help get it off. Great I thought, I'll leave it in, the chrome will peel off, then I can 're plate it.
But it's eaten the steel away under the chrome. It sort of turned it to black sludge. It magbhave just eaten one component of whatever kind of high strength steel they make kick start levers from.
Unfkrthnatelynits a very rare lever so I'll have to weld the damage up and grind/file it all back before I 're plate it.
It was bloody new old stock too, just peeling chrome from years of bad storage.
The damage to that lever is why im a little wary of using citric on this.
But then I'm wary of electrolysis too from what I learnt doing the plating.

I like those split static jaw Parkinson's, was hoping to find one today but no joy.

Green seems to be the colour, although I haven't got around to stripping mine down to check what colour it is under the grime (it's stashed away at the moment).

Most of the ones i can find pics of are green, some look to be original too. Some seem to be white though, but thats an odd colour for a vice.
Doesn't really matter if its staying in my workshop. My 're painted record is more 'epoxy primer overspray grey' than blue these days!

The lathe doesn't look that "handy" to me. Nice though.
I may have one if those vices sat on the end of the lathe stand.

And the military stamp I suspected would probably be on it, these all seem to be ex military
Quick release lever plate is brass by the looks of it.
Under the rust, it looks pretty decent.

The similarities are strong,
finally a Parkinson with an anvil. Interesting that the dynamic clamping jaw has the small step for the front plate of the QR even without QR -> one cast for all.
However, the differences are also significant. Different generation entirly.
When did the decorations at the end of the slide ended up being dropped?

I don't think mine had a brass release plate.... hmmm, I'll have to dig it out for a look at some point. I don't think the rust on yours is as bad as it looks at first, can't wait to see it done.

Good question about the decorations, I don't know when they were dropped however so far I believe we have only seen them on the vices that have used the spelling of 'vice' rather than 'vise'. They aren't present on my early model F that uses the spelling 'vise'Nice find!

The step present on the front of the Handy vice is I believe to stop filing swarf falling onto the surface where the spindle contact the front face of the sliding jaw.

Here's a question, is the high parting line on the two part vices only present on the large sizes and the low line on the small versions?
