That extra lever below appears to be for actuating a vacuum disc, to attach the vice by suction on smooth surfaces.

I have something similar, also no markings, but very well made. The vice design looks to be of the German type.

There is certainly a noticeable difference in the 518 1/2. To the 518 but think thay only ever made the 4 sizes

The fortis 10 3J is back together.
Painted it last week but only just got time to do any more.
Could do with a bit more grease on the screw, couldn't find it so put some spray grease on it.
Cut some O1 steel for the jaws, just waiting on a tap and some bolts.
I'll probably harden and temper them as they are a bit soft in their annealed state.
Can't decide if I'll knurl them or not. I have no real way of doing it, I'd probably have to use a hand file!
Still trying to find a way of doing it with the lathe, or even the pillar drill, bit not come up with anything yet.
The green is a bit lighter than I had in mind and hopefully the steel will settle down and brown up a bit.
It's all a bit Christmas at the moment, especially on the red floor!
I know some folk don't like the tops of the jaws painted, won't last, wire brushing etc etc, but I've never wire brushed anything in a vice in my life.
My other vices are just fine with painted jaw tops.

Mine is this one from Toolstation absolute rubbish but I included it as it is still a vice

So this one must as well ...
Yesterday I stopped by again at the scrapper of my confidence.
He didn't have what I was looking for, but a vise that I had seen there more than once was still standing around.
I asked his price again this time and he seemed to have forgotten what he had always told me before - the thing had suddenly become cheaper and I couldn't leave him standing.
The birdman logo gives it away: A HS6 from Meier & Weichelt in Leipzig.
Another example for my assumption, which I already mentioned here, that vices belonged to the goods which were still denominated in inches in Germany long after the final introduction of the metric system, like e.g. pipes until today.
Consequently, the HS6 has 150mm jaws. It appears to be an older piece, with the large anvil area.
This specimen still thinks to be able to remain completely stuck - he just doesn't know better.
Even in the GDR, people knew good products when they saw them, and so the main models of the old vises continued to be built, now metric and socialist.
Here is one of the successors from the GDR, an HS150:
If my new acquisition continues to refuse to play along even after generous use of penetrating oil, this may become my first attempt to put a complete unit into electrolytic rust removal and see if rust breaks up in the smallest cavities.

The threaded rod hangs on the negative pole of the battery charger, the individual strands are not connected to one hand tool each, as usual, but to different parts of the vise, because it is quite possible that layers of rust electrically insulate different components of the vise from each other.
The anode is formed by an angled flat iron that runs along the head end and half of the top edge of the vat, with the positive terminal of the charger attached to it - you can see quite clearly where the anode is located from the dirty foam....
The charger delivers about 14V unloaded in the rapid charging/starting position.
During electrolysis, about 2.5A flows depending on the conductivity of the broth, the distance between the cathode and anode, and apparently the respective areas of the two. The current is no problem for the thin strands, because 2.5A / 7 strands ~ 357mA per strand - they don't even get warm.
I have not tried it yet, but I assume that modern, so-called intelligent chargers are completely unsuitable here, they often refuse to work when the batteries are too empty, with this load they can certainly do nothing ... The cheapest analog piece without any gimmicks should do it.

Here's a little something I got today (they're vice related so hopefully ok to put on here).
Some old JABCLAMPS. These are still boxed & don't look to have ever been used. Weird things & I dunno how much use they'll be. I haven't put them on a vice yet as it's cold & dark out there & I can't be bothered going out to the garage - maybe tomorrow .
If anyone has any experience of using these, i'd be interested to hear it

They do but mine has three generations of use. Every mark and bit of welding spatter was made by a family member! It will stay as it is to remind me
