Just to absolutely certain, I've checked the vice again and the nut is the correct way round.

Since i joined the thred ive fineshed quite a few restorations the record auto vice being one of them i made. A new back for it and welded it on.

Yes, it only fits one way.
This was one of the first things I checked ( multiple times by now).

You are definitely not winding me up, I've enough experience of fixing problems to know that silly little things can often happen and be overlooked.

Earlier I tried the half nut from an old Record 53 wood vice, I was able to tighten the vice normally, but that half nut is too small.

Any chance you could post a photo of the underside of the vice?

The nut may indeed be worn then. Unusual, but it could happen.

I'll provide a photo as soon as I can, the vice is current dismantled, as I was checking that the nut was the correct way around.
The profile of the nut threads when looked at end on do not follow a smooth curve, but not having seen another Parkinson half nut, I don't know what a good one looks like

Mine was covered in horrible silver paint when I first got it.

Being that it was local, and I have an old surface grinder, my itchy finger just had to put in a bid; which I was surprised won it.
Its a Jones & Shipman grinding vice in excelent mechanical condition, but very dirty. Its also missing the moving jaw face, which might have been what put off the bidders; but that's not a problem, as I have parallel that could be modified to fit. This is going to clean up nice.

progress on the joplin 5, all 4 jaws screws snapped off and required drilling out and tapping. Broke several drill bits in process, now have to make some new jaws so have decided to make by hand out of 12mm plate. A labour of love for sure.

The spring is for a Record, and doesn't fit well with the Parkinson nut, but does hold. Fixing it is in the pipeline - I'll try to find a replacement, or maybe make one.
Interesting that the tang on your adjuster nut is bent out to grip the spring hook, mine isn't.

I will try to source a replacement half nut, as I was also thinking it looks worn.

Under load.
I've tested at various positions.
If I block the half nut from disengaging (wedge the lever), I can tighten the vice.

Initial disassembly. These grinding vices are really well made, the contact surfaces only require the slightest bit of snugging up of the bolt with the fingers to bind the surfaces and make it a chore to move by hand. Got a bit too cold outside to deal with brushing solvent today, so I'm leaving all to soak over night.

not really a welding vice but a woodworking vice, would anyone know when this was produced, i understand a Sheffield co, however have tried to find paramo catalogues with no luck, any suggestions welcome

I have a 6inch Paramo bench vice, not a woodworking one like yours. From the research I did at the time when I got it, it was suggested that they were clones of Record vices, made during the war to avoid a shortage of such necessities.
