Colour is quite similar to what they shopped Woden steel vices out in.

Back in ye olde times I remember being 14 and mutilating the BSF nuts on my lawnmower with an adjustable crescent and a wood chisel to hold the shaft steady (all of which I still have… exact location of chisel and crescent not currently available). I brought the piece in and my woodwork teacher helped me get it off. Years later I restored the mower again which was a trip down memory lane, now I have a beautiful Britool BSW socket set and a strapping great vice with soft jaws, I really wondered how I managed to get as far as I did with about 5 tools back then…

Too right. Well said. These things are to be pleasing to our eye, & to function how we want them. Originality is a nice sentiment, but our choices, in the future, become someone elses "patina".

I bought a new spring for the Parky #7, but it hasn't helped.

Even tightened to the max - about ten notches, with the coil tight around the shaft it still jumps out when tightening.

I checked the faces of the half nut in case they had worn to a slope which pushed the half nut down when tightening, and cleaned them up, but it made no difference.

I'm at a loss, as I can't think of anything else to try, anyone have any other suggestions.

If I prevent the lever from moving, I can tighten the jaws, but not otherwise.

Some had a cast saddle for the half nut lever bar, some just a short piece of flat mild holding the bar in place. Yours is normal.

Found that out, it has now been converted to a book end.

All stripped down.
It looks like the major task will be releasing the jaw screws.
Any tips for releasing them?

Almost at the assembly stage. The movable jaw has some deep gouges that I was going to try and add metal by welding and then grinding flat.
Since this is cast would their be a problem with welding onto it.
I am sure I read that cast iron is a bit of a no-go area for welding, but would this be OK.

You do what you can with what you've got. You acquire better as you become more skilled. Hopefully, that Crescent has been consigned to the scrap bin and you've got a proper set of spanners.

Crescents are absolutely useful and not a scrap tool. They are however not the right tool for loosening a seized nut!

The spanner collection is getting there. A few sizes missing… all Britool RJ

Not a fan of adjustable spanners, and I flinch on seeing pliers being used to undo nuts and bolts. As an ex spanner monkey mine have mixed origins, from Snap On to Snail, to Britool to Ford. All sizes, metric, AF and Whitworth and several have been cut down as floggers or ground to fit odd sizes or spaces.

Yes, it only fits one way.
This was one of the first things I checked ( multiple times by now).

You are definitely not winding me up, I've enough experience of fixing problems to know that silly little things can often happen and be overlooked.

Earlier I tried the half nut from an old Record 53 wood vice, I was able to tighten the vice normally, but that half nut is too small.

@Will1964 - don't let the banter put you off, we all have to start off somewhere.

My observation would be that if it were mounted further forward it would allow long, vertical work-pieces to clear the front of the bench. It may just be pic perspective but it looks like your siting wont allow that?
