Sort the spring tension out. Set the lever to the correct position.
Bit of oil. Not grease and you should be good to go.

That nut looks good. Do as TYA mentions. I usually find 4 clicks of the adjuster nut gets you close.

I didn't need a few days.

I was able to test the spring tonight, and your recommendations seem correct.

With the vice assembled and upside down, I was able to see that under load the half nut is being lifted out of the threads.
I increased the spring pressure, and the lifting was reduced - more pressure required to lift, unfortunately I couldn't apply sufficient force as the spring broke.
Could be it was old and in a bad way to begin with- I'll order up a replacement spring and try again.

The vice doesn't have a standard half nut guide fitted, just a piece of steel anchoring one side of the lever bar, I'll find out after the spring is replaced whether this is significant.

Some had a cast saddle for the half nut lever bar, some just a short piece of flat mild holding the bar in place. Yours is normal.

My current vice is a £20 Aldi special, except it’s not very special. It will be relegated to holding things while welding.
Just about to pick up a used Record 23, which just needs new jaws and a clean hopefully.
I don’t have a table I can attach it to. The vice in the picture is mounted on a railway sleeper off-cut with grooves routed on each side, so it fits securely to a B&D workmate and removed when not needed.
Does anyone else have a vice mounting idea that means it can be secure when used, but moved when not needed.
I tend to work outside when the weather is good and inside when not, so mobility is needed.

Have a look on YouTube for " Trailer Hitch Vise Mount ".
Overseas my friend had a similar attachment, where he welded a 2" square receiver pipe under his workbench to slide in one of his vices on a plate with a pipe stem that slipped in and is secured with a cross pin.

Nice collection. The Auto Vice has got to be one of the best designs of all times, It just has a finesse about it that makes it a classic.

The no 74 has the swive mising and a is mising ths rear part of the bace so a lot of new parts to make

Dug up a cupple of others the big one is a no 6 record and the smal one is a record no 2 with swivle. Excuse the mess new shed is under construction

Hi, now got the Record 23, it’s much bigger than I expected, but it will be better than my current Aldi special.
Pictures to follow.
Ordered new jaws and screws. I have stripped it down completely apart from the jaw screws which seem to be well and truly seized. I will get to them at the weekend.
The part of the sliding jaw that slides into the base looks as though it has been used as an anvil at some point in its life. It’s very pitted, but it is straight and slides easily. Would it be OK to weld over the pitting and then grind it flat (don’t have a milling machine) or just leave it?
It’s just cosmetic but would be nice to have it looking a bit better.
Also it’s been painted red at some point, very badly, with the screws still on. I think whoever did it used a broom rather than a brush.
Paint stripper or sand blasting?

I know its done, but personally I don't like the idea of welding on a vice. I have one vice which had a couple of small casting pits on it, so I hammered in bits of lead and filed smooth; worked a treat and was barely noticeable, unless you actually looked for them.
