Ignoring the manky yellow and dirt, if it's as well made as it looks and the QR works well, then the build and the slide refinements must make that about the best bench vice there is.

It's very well made and is mounted on the bench in my 2nd workshop (Parkinson no 7 in the other workshop).
Can you see the 'ear' that sticks out at the back end of the slide? When I bought it the ear on the other side was bent over about 1/2" where it had been dropped at some point, I have since bent it back.

I was told that this forum is the best place to ask my questions about the Paramo QR vice I bought and refurbished two months ago. I’m wondering if someone can tell me approx. how old and what model nr. the vice is (pictures below)?

I’ve done some googeling and the closest I came to put a modelnr. on it was a «Paramo No.41 QR Vice» but unlike the few pictures I found on this model my vice has bevelled edges on the «insert part», a rounded end of where the handle goes through and only the «Paramo» name stamped into the main body of the vice.

The other and smaller Paramo vice I bought from the same person also has bevelled edges on the insert part but have a model nr. on the main body.
If it helps the experts out there I noticed that the vice was originally green when I was degreasing and wire brushing the vice.

Thank you for the link. And I thought I paid way too much for my Paramo but when looking at the asking price from the one in your link mine was cheap
Will put paint stripper on mine and re-paint it green as the original.

Picked this war relic vice up in pieces scattered outside on the ground at an architectural scrap yard on the Somme in 2014 for just 10 euros during an expedition with a WW1 Crossley Tender Lurry during the 1914 centenary commemorations. Amazingly all the parts were there and I have reassembled it for my son to use. I expect it was left behind after the Great War by the Canadians along with 25,000 of their fallen soldiers. A poignant reminder everytime I see it in the workshop.

Another one back into service, picked this up for a fiver. It was in a pretty bad way, someone had hidden the defects by painting the entire vice (inside and out, including the jaw faces) in a layer of awful paint.
The hole in the movable jaw (for the thread), was badly worn and oval; strangely the thread itself was OK, just pitted.
I reamed out the jaw hole, and added an insert.
The large washer is to spread the load around the insert.

Not a pristine restore, but I want it to use.
No mug to hand, so I've included safety glasses.

I don't have a milling machine, so squared up the jaws, by sliding an angle grinder disk between them, probably not a good method, but they are reasonably square.
Alternative methods anyone?

yup -- my no9 first version (3 main castings not 2) is approx 119lbs - had to be extremely careful lifting it onto its Parkinson's stand (even heavier but with 2 wee wheels)


biased I may be but I think it's a beaut -- even a couple of folks who are def not vice people have paused to admire
--- although they may say 'why do you need it?' - to which I have no answer ----


second thoughts - now I've got the heaviest vice I could possibly lift, I seem to have slowed down any chasing of 'big boys'

Hi Matt, have you been able identify the RAL colour as I have a No 4 which has the remains of same colour and I wish to repaint it.

Found this today at a house clearance centre, a No 00 Paramo attached to a table, bought both for £15. The vice is in fantastic nick, hardly used, though a little gummed up with paint and grease. Currently in pieces soaking in a bath of white spirit. Once degreased I'll knock back the burrs, reassemble and keep it for when needed. I think it was only the woodworm holding hands that kept the table together. Still with a bit of sanding, treatment and some Danish oil should last for a while in the garden.
