And for something different - I seem to accumulate clamp-on vices, even tho I really prefer fixed - this one is big for a clamp-on - 3in jaws and that's a regular No2 Sheffield bench vice it's on (Ward and Payne Anvil).
Casting quality seems top notch and it has those square 'cheeks' characteristic of many good ol' US vises like Athol, Prentiss or Reed and nicely detailed radiuses etc, but no name - any help in the ID?

Got a scraper out to start work on the stands and was thinking about a far smaller Stanley bench-clamp vise I used to have --- so I scraped the machined top of the slide of this one - and there it was - a very feint but clear stamp "Stanley SW No 766" - looked at one Stanley UK cata - not there, only smaller sizes, but in Uk Stanley Cata No 34 (1925) it's there - the largest in the series - 766 with steel jaws and 746 iron jaws, 776 rotating, not clamp. Each approx 9lbs.
Solved. (and cost under £10 if I remember).
That's what happened when I got the v small Stanley vise - no obvious id until cleaned it up (752, I think).
