HEADS UP !

For those who might be interested, I just spotted what appears to me to be a Columbian 4 1/2" SWIVEL JAW, and swivel base vice on Evil BAY.
Listed as "Old Vintage Engineers Swivel Vice". Item number 1341 8304 7853 , which has a buy it now price. Usual disclaimer, nothing to do with me.

Below are several photos of my 3 1/2" version for comparison. Won't see one of these very often.

Hi all,

Lurked around these forums for a while and enjoy dipping into this thread occasionally. Thought I'd register to share this beaut I picked up locally yesterday for a steal price of £25 on FB marketplace.

It's a Woden M.132. Can't find any information at all about this model.. anyone..? The jaw width is 5" and the vice opens to around 7".
Apart from a bit of surface rust and the inevitable dings and scoring here and there, and missing the nut for the main nut retention bolt it's in amazing condition for what I paid. The leadscrew is virtually unworn - once I've got the nut locked down I'm predicting very little backlash. Chuffed is an understatement.

Just aquired a No 84 Steel vice and noticed its got AM cast in the body and the slider. Anybody got any ideas of its meaning? - I'm guessing Air Ministry but don't know

Tall enough to frequently trip over it.

But seriously, i prefer to grind low to the floor where the sparks cause less damage to everything around them.

The RSJ is also heavy enough to work as a cheap anvil for bashing stuff straight.

I could see it being very useful, I tend to use a 9" grinder lower down, standing up if I let it naturally swing down it would end up in my knee, lower down it would hit the floor.

They're ok.

When I first started out I didn't have a decent vice or even a decent bench. So I bolted a cheap vice to an RSJ. I later made a solid bench and bought a big vice. But I found the little vice on the RSJ was still useful. I had some spare wheels so I bolted them on and now it's even more useful.

Not long ago I saw an old and very sought after "Leinen" in exactly this design.
(I would have to see if I have saved any pictures of it ...).

Just got back from hospital with pneumonia after getting leptospirosis from the cyclone
it looked German made to me by the handle bar ends, has a very different sliding jaw rail etc, when I’m strong enough will take it apart and find out what’s going on

I finally got round to disassembling the old swivel vice, came apart very easily and a unique design. Not sure rear nut and washer are original as whilst they work with quite a lot of back lash it does not seem precise enough and does not explain why the rear end of spindle has a square section.
note the pattern of the main spindle on its trailing edge, they are not chips but machine marks, could anyone shed any light on that

you seem to be doing much better - very good, that's what we want to see!

Man, your vice is quite something else

Here some pics of the Leinen I had in mind ... your specimen beats it quite clearly ...

No matter what yours is in the end, it misses a disk - you should be able to make one from this pics, the function is quite clear.

But man, yours ... I have to dig, looking forward to what is there to be find - but don't hold your breath ...


On the spindle it looks like machining marks before round grinding - bit rough but nothing to worry about.

Yes I agree a bit rough, the vice is not up to the standard of a leinen in my opinion
