Let's start a "mahogany and brass" thread for the old camera nuts like thee and me.Exif data says it's a Century 46, Goertz Dpl Anstg 180mm f:6
Sorry, no geolocation tag.
Don't get me started, no, just kidding. I only have one very old camera and the crummy digital I use for posting photos.Let's start a "mahogany and brass" thread for the old camera nuts like thee and me.
(not sure how that ties in with mig-welding, however.)
I finally got round to disassembling the old swivel vice, came apart very easily and a unique design. Not sure rear nut and washer are original as whilst they work with quite a lot of back lash it does not seem precise enough and does not explain why the rear end of spindle has a square section.
note the pattern of the main spindle on its trailing edge, they are not chips but machine marks, could anyone shed any
That squared end looks like it should house a valve handle. Is the spindle original to the vice or has it been modified from something else. It might also explain the the machining marks which could have been caused during modification.View attachment 387337
square section on the rear of the spindle might suggest it slotted into an end cap

that thought has crossed my mind, the spindle is a bit under whelming, markings on the rear of the vice do suggest an end cap thoughThat squared end looks like it should house a valve handle. Quiet possibly, but it certainly has the look of a valve spindle, or even a length of rod gearing.that thought has crossed my mind, the spindle is a bit under whelming, markings on the rear of the vice do suggest an end cap though
Don't think the workers are military, mainly due to the mess and the clothing. Obviously during the day looking at the window and lack of lighting, so could it be a sort of Saturday Club? I remember in the early 60's my dad used to go to classes where he could build furniture and be taught basic word working skills. These classes were laid on by the local council and fed the DIY fad of the time. While the photo may day a little earlier could it be such a class?Love pix of old vices in place/on the job - so couldn't resist buying this v fine and sharp photo for somewhat more than I'd normally pay for an anon photo (normal max £5? or £20 for an album?)

This is a very sharp whole-plate photo.
What's going on here? - they don't look like apprentices or practicing woodworkers to me - my best guesses - 1. teacher training, 2. a 'gentleman's' hobby woodworking class, 3. something like officer training (instructor wouldn't like the mess in this case) or engineer/architect training where they have to do a bit of shop practice.
The benches appear to be 'English style' but with thick cast-iron legs.
The phot, as I say, is very sharp - on it I can see that the pictures at the back are of various trees and tree-trunks.
Best till last: the vices are all Parkinson's Perfect (yes, for the anoraks like me, I can see the apostrophe before the s, which means that these are version 1 (from approx 1888-1898?)) - in good nick, so maybe up to 10 years old at most?
Dress, vice type, whole-plate photo - I'd guess pre WWI
Do you have any more info? It looks like an unusual setup. Is the handle end the fixed jaw? What's its indented use?Record 644 picked up today.

Nice! Seen drawings in catalogues, but never seen one. I'd ha e snapped that up too!Picked up this little beauty today. Moves freely and quick release seems okay on first look. 6” jaws. Jaws not quite meeting evenly but pretty happy with it. Been after one after I had seen on here ages ago. Also £25, so a bargain!
