I have a close relative of that with the same swivel support for the anvil end - was not expensive - a few pounds, but have seen them pricey in UK (not £6000.oo tho' - see post last page - any of you buy that one? - as if).

Re the indentations on the side of jaw - many small vices of 100 yrs ago seem to have this - I assumed to peen the jaw insert in place - but does this have a jaw insert?

Not made a lamp from a vice, yet. But drills, routers, blow lamps have all been converted. 'erindoors loves them, so who am I to argue. Impressive collection, yet so many of the large, heavier vices were up high. Liked the cranes, could do with something like that occasionally, if only to get my teenage son out of bed!

Finally got the 6" swindens apart.

Asked a local agricultural engineering co. to help with their big press and lots of heat. They got it moving (not apart) and I got it split at home. Very happy with the outcome.

Looks like a layer of rust on the end of the slide was stopping it.

I made new stainless steel linings on the jaws of the vice. I used pieces of an aluminum beer can to adjust the gap, but the fit of the pad on the jaw was still very tight. I removed the old burrs (cast steel vice), but to remove the linings, you have to use a small hammer. I think over time the fit will wear in, but it will still be tight and not loose, just like I wanted. Despite the clamps, the linings were slightly bent upward at the corners. I “scrape” the horizontality and parallelism of the linings using an angle grinder, following the imprint of the file.

euro made i think, nice tight action with signs of little use

Record 75, problems problems

I thought I'd done well to pick up this well used but ripe for improvement Record 75 locally

However, now it's been stripped and cleaned, I've hit a bit of a snag. The "nut" or threaded receiver that sits at the back of the vice is cracked almost half way around the circumference.
Moreover, it's the bit that's in tension, so one fine day, a hefty pull on the handle is going to snap it clean in two.

This is going to be very much a working vice, for day to day use, not a shelf exhibit, so it needs to be fixed.

Not really sure what to do for the best

I think welding is out, since it's cast iron
Vee the crack out and braze it. That would have been my first choice when I had oxy acetylene, but I've gone down-market to oxy propane and not enjoying it as much.
TIG braze it ???
Obviously, if I go too deep and hit the root of the thread, then a whole new fubar opportunity awaits

I'm seriously wondering whether I should try to make a new one from mild steel bar. My lathe will cut 4 TPI, but the capacity of the machine far exceeds the capability of the user.
I've cut threads using inserts but never done anything remotely like an ACME thread. Not sure whether I want to invest in tooling for a one-off job.

So far, it owes me £50 and an afternoon with the wire wheel, so option B, cut my losses is also waiting in the wings

What would you do ?

If tig is your available method, go with that. Worst case scenario, you end up having to chase the thread out if any filler fouls it. New nut is last resort, if necessary.

Seen it done, doesn't look like you need a vast array of tools. Not sure if that process would be strong enough on its own. Maybe stitch and silver solder (low temperature braze).

I mean, it is still in one piece...

As for cutting a thread on a lathe if you can cut a regular thread then you can cut a square or acme profiled thread. The art is in shaping the cutting tool, once you've done that it's basically the same process. Obviously you have to be more careful when cutting as there won't be a thread chaser or die nut to get you out of trouble. But its not that difficult.

It's tougher, so you end up with with a lighter vice.
