Needs a clean up .
It has Record fibre jaws fitted but only
" made in England " cast on the side.

Swindens vice I have had lying around for quite some time. Bought for ~£50 from a member on here. Bit of light surface rust . Handle is missing.

• Strip down.
• Caustic soda bath.
• Citric acid bath.
• Rinsed, dried, then a good soak for a while in clean engine oil allowing it to soak into the pores.
• Re-assemble and a good'ol rub over with black shoe polish

• Turned a new handle using my new lathe.

No other markings whatsoever? Any chance of a few more shots of it?

There's a couple of faded stickers but I can't make them out, it's not QR and it has a small anvil on the back of it.
I'll put a few pics up when I get a chance.

I added a new vice to my modest collection when I bought one of these all steel Record Auto Vises a few months ago. I had been looking at buying one of them for a while and eventually a good one at a fair price came up.

After finally getting around to fixing it to the bench (pretty much where it is in this picture on the corner) it turns out that there's quite a lot of slop in the rotating section.

This locks by two interlocking wave patterns being clamped together. Either I'm not tightening it enough, there's a bit missing from between the two halves (some sort of spacer/seal), it's incredibly worn, or they are all like this. Any advice appreciated!

Matt, from what everyone says about your "vice addiction problem", I was expecting a post more like:
"These are most of my Record ones.
Here's some more Record vices.
This is my collection of Swindens'.
Here are the Wiltons.
These ones are Reeds'.
These three are made by Prentiss.
This is the cream of the crop, the Emmert 6A.
Now we get onto the woodworkers vices..."
From your first post, you really don't seem like you have a problem.

Just popped out to one of the sheds and there are 10 parkinsons, 2 german vices, another wilton, another swivel jaw american vice, a polish vice and another ball vice that I showed years ago on this thread. Samsonias and other vices I can't remember are in a different shed. Oh and two leg vices.

I would love one of those Dohm vices but I have never seen one down here. I bought a Record 53A for the sole reason that it was too cheap to pass up and it's the crown jewels of the Record wood vice range.

Thanks for those, the only bit I am missing is the pipe jaw. I was hoping to make a new one but haven't seen any decent pictures of one to try and copy from. Measurements would help too!

The diagrams don't show anything between the swivel base and the main body so I'm still none the wiser to the movement in mine...
