often see drilling through to the vice bed but looks like this user might even have missed the part altogether (several times) - maybe it was back in the bad old days when every machinist had a distracting pin-up calendar behind his set-up

I think it's usually deliberate, saw people do it all the time at school.

Got this beauty today.

The knurling looks to be in fair condition.

I could be wrong, but the rust appears to be in excellent condition...gives it a nice patina.

The only two places it contacts the housing are at each end. Does the screw turn? Does the front jaw slide in the rear jaw housing? What exactly is stuck, now?

Front or back then. Those are the only two points where it can be rusted solid, now the nut is out. How much pressure have you put on the handle to try & turn it?

Out of interest, I was just watching the auction run down for a Dohm Wilson vice. In the last few seconds it went from £100.oo to £203.oo for a two inch wide jaw vice. Wow, Ebay fever is getting crazy.

I'm certainly not going to suggest vices as an investment, but, if you cherish a model/type/make, get it now before they all want one

what's your bet for the next mad UK price? (which will still be far less than the US desirables) - I think Swindens, Peter Wright and Dohm are already pretty high -- how about Blair or the old Wilton-style York? - both well made but not pricey just now (I know the York is Czech but they seem to have sold a lot here in the 70s)

in the US the really big prices seem to be for the smallest and largest vises

what I've been looking at is the acme screw woodworking vices from before Parkinsons QR - QR is nice, but can get sticky, clogged, spring trouble

I never acquired vise's/vice's as an investment, just bought them when used ones came along that I liked; fortunately I chose well. Today I started moving stuff from our storage unit to the new garage and found a magnetic vice I forgot about. It came with the surface grinder I bought but was too large for the capacity of the machine. I found an Eclipse 5" x 10" that was the right size, so not sure what I'm going to do with this one. Its a 6" x 14" Walker Hagou NV model 30. I noticed that @doubleboost uses a magnetic chuck to hold the sheet metal designs he cuts out on his plasma table for polishing, but I doubt I'll be doing such work.

just pondering --- how small do quick release vices (bench, engineers type) go? - my favourite QR, the Parky, only goes down to a 3.5in wide jaw QR (2.25 for handy acme thread), Vono go down to 3in QR (but quite a hefty vice)-- any smaller?

Haven't seen anything in the 2 1/2" or smaller range, and I wouldn't think it necessary as the vice openings rarely exceed the width of the jaws; so just a few spins of the tommy bar is all that's needed to open it to maximum capacity. Vices with jaws of 3 1/2" and larger usually have a much larger opening capability so the quick release function saves time and effort.

At least that's my take on it.

never mind 'don't ask questions' as Location, Maker, it is obviously St Helens -- there's a St Helens

seller who must've gone to the same school listing this 'engineering vice' on the bay -- I'd say there's not a lot of engineering left in it

Paramo No 2 done. Slightly different (lighter) shade blue to a Record, and Wodens were a touch darker than a Record. Must say I do like this vice shape.

The quality of what I assume is a hobby vice is really superb.

Record 74 done - new pipe jaw, new anvil, new retainer disc for under the bench. This vice was a pain to restore as there are so many parts. Glad it’s done!

Picked up a little Parkinson No 0A.

Take a good look at the rear of the sliding jaw. The rear lower skirts can crack.

Mine did, but only showed it self after de-rusting.
