Just bought an old Faircut "Junior" bench lathe, just needs putting back together drive wise as it was stripped for storage by the previous owner. Doesn't look to be any wear on in! Will get some pics when I have a space for it.

They're the ones which have the bronze back gear guards/covers, are they not? Nice looking machines.

Yeah that's the one, it is a nice machine, although as always with these things the drive has been altered to suit a new motor, but not to a point it's useable, so u need a lathe to alter the pulley to make my lathe work!

Recently I finally fitted a 4hp single phase motor to the 13" harrison that I bought back last year, the harrison was fitted with a double speed motor so I chose the slower of the two 4hp motors available as it gave me a reasonable range of speeds.

Just need to fit a new contactor that has a u.v. For an Estop and rig up some sort of suds pump.

Why are some people irresponsible of their self?(quite a few,judging by the thread here) the first rule of thumb in operating a lathe is not to put tools,bits and bobs on top of the headstock.....do you want a bolt/chuck key sticking out of your head?

i agree it could cause an accident, however, it's a convenient place to keep stuff.

But here's a thought..... If it really was the first rule of thumb in operating a lathe then surely the manufacturers wouldn't make the top of the headstock so much like a shelf? And some even have a nice little rubber mat on them

Nice one. We're in for a lecture now you've given Dan an opening Rory. Must say though, he does have a very valid point. It only takes one knock or some vibration to shift something and you have a high speed projectile. Better to just shift stuff off there than risk it.

here's my little hobbymat lathe, bought it new in the early 1990's when I was working in a 5ft x 5ft shed, so didnt have space for a bigger machine,and compared to the machinery some of you guys have it is the size of a toy in comparison.....I'm guilty of putting things on the headstock, looking at this thread reminds me I need to get some anti slip rubber for it,so I've just ordered some on ebay

Matt, yes and no, I got the drive sorted to the point I needed new belts and a net motor pulley to adjust the speed range I get with the step pulleys. Got a pulley and then needed the space so its been sidelined!

A nice old Harrison and they wont vibrate a millimeter

I've just bought another lathe to replace my existing "big" lathe; that's the old Colchester Triumph pictured in post 209 on this thread. My new machine is a Dean Smith & Grace 17 x 36. Here's a few pics taken last Tuesday -the day a lorry driver mate and I collected it from Worcesterhire and bought it back to Kent.

This machine needs a fair bit of tidying type work, but seems to be in basically good nick; no real bed wear, runs nice and quietly etc. It does have a DRO setup (messily) installed, but the head unit was removed for safe keeping before craning the lathe onto Matt's truck. I'm looking forward to using the lathe, but not mounting any of the accessory type stuff, lifting the fixed steady off the floor made me grunt, hoiking it right up onto the lathe bed will probably be real fun!

My old lathe about 15yr ago.
1000RPM action shot Dan, that's facing off 1/2" removal on 5 1/4" dia with power feed.
My rubber mats missing.

In 20 odd years only recently had a vernier slide off current lathe which also doesn't have a rubber mat.
