Spencer it sounds like you know what you want machine wise then. Not sure why you are so keen on the double pulse function, but if that's a requirement then you need to sort out your electrics, if 3 phase is not an option then you need to work out how to get a higher amp supply to your shed.

Hi.. yes I am keen on the Oxford. Had other machines but am not particularly happy with my current welders... I want to go back to separate machines. Yes three phase is out of the question...

Other than tow bars what do you plan on using this machine for? Double pulse is a rather extravagant feature, if you were doing alot of Aluminium and stainless or thin sheet then it's a good addition to a machine, if not you may just be spending pennies for the sake of it.

Stainless is next on my list as have other projects in the pipeline that would benefit being made of it...some aluminium to.

yeah, 60a incoming fuse is proper s***e... he's basically screwed.

It looks to be a decent supply, I've seen 100a fuses on old cotton covered wires and 60a on big 25mm tails

To be fair he could probably get that fuse swapped with minimal hassle - depends what's upstream (60A incomers on decent cabling is sometimes because of load management at the substation).

We are just started the process of buying this place...council house. It had rewire last year

I mean I've never swapped a cutout myself, because it's illegal and dangerous

Alltho can you not uprate the fuse as it protects the wire it's feeding? I know that carrier is limited but we used to put bigger fuses in when we came across 40's if the board etc was modern (not bigger than on the carrier tho)

Dno told me to put a 60 in, apparently it blew after the rewire and the sparky "fixed" it

I don't no what to do ....I can get a 16 amp supply fitted and then be able to use my machine at maximum 200 amps.. I did want a pused mig.. but then I will not be able to weld 12 15mm plate.. kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Getting the fuse upgraded looks like an expensive pain in the rear, I spoke to the dno about replacing my 60s with 100A and they wanted me to pay to have the incoming cable replaced. so I changed my mind!

Is there a reason you don't want to stick weld the thicker stuff?
I personally use MIG for thicker Aluminium, everything else is Stick or TIG although I will occasionally use MIG for building up wear in steel rollers.

I can stick weld some stuff...but other parts I have to weld in situ and can be totally out of position for stick.

Almost all my welding is positional, just takes a wee bit practice.

a 60 amp fuse will NOT blow at 60Amps, it takes a fair bit more than that (I'm currently hunting out my copy of BS7671 to get the table with the curves)

A cut out fuse rated at 60amps, It'll flow just over 100amps pretty much indefinetely...it'll flow 120amps for 16-17 minutes before it blows (and might even take longer than that...)

Give you an example, my parents had an all electric house for years, most of that time they were on a 60Amp fuse, never blew once, despite 5 people living in the house with a 9.5Kw shower (40amps), electric cooker (20-30amps), dryer (10 amps), Washer (10amps) all on at the same time plus Tvs, lights etc...

a restaurant I was called out to were pulling 120 amps of a 100amp cutout fuse everything was warm but the fuse didn't blow. if your welding u can use diversity as the welder isn't working at a constant load for a long period

Ok: what budget do you have in mind?
Might be worth giving UKPN a bell, I have heard of people in urban areas getting install quotes of < £2.5K to do the work, pull in new cable and replace the cut out from a single phase to a 3 phase.

Its worth considering all your options fully, its all to easy to paint yourself mentally into a corner thinking stuff will be totally off the chart and then turns out that it would have been cheaper...been there done that

Always worth looking at the various options. Leccy board specced it but I dug my own service trench 450mts across fields to the nearest supply in the road, leccy board came and laid a big three phase cable , connected to a new head and meter for £850. Digging my own trench and reinstating saved me 6K. A friend in a similar position but a lot further away from the road had his meter fitted roadside and ran his own sub main in, a saving of 18k. Downside of this is they wanted the sub main protected , every time it trips he has to drive down to box at the road.

Just asked my mate in Glasgow how much it was to get 3 phase put in he was £1200. He dug the trench etc so that saved a fair bit, so maybe getting 3 phase in would be a good option if you are intending staying there for a good while.
