Lathes look great when they have been refurbished. A lick of paint and metal components are oiled . it's why I never repainted mine.

Space or lack of was my biggest enemy.Totally agree. If ever there is a fault, that intimate knowledge of the machine allows you to quickly dismantle and gain access. Plus it’s fun! There was a lot of paint left on mine but it wasn’t bonded to the primer anymore, the linbide scraper pulled off chips easily. I’m leaving the good primer and filler as it’s virtually part of the casting. If I can get mine looking as good as yours, I will be a happy man! I think unless you’ve restored a machine it’s difficult to fathom the amount of time you’ll spend to start from getting back to bare metal and re-painting it all and getting it into working order once more.

2 weeks solid and space would have seen it finished.
Took hours to sus getting the apron off initially. I could have the lathe in bits in an hour now if needed.
Currently eyeing up a screwcutting gearbox to modify and fit.
If you've read the thread then you'll know that he was not talking about a thread cutting geabox as you claimed. You're wrong but won't admit it.
If he wants to use the lathe as it is I have absolutely no problem with that at all. Where did I say that I did ? I made a suggestion. Am I to be taken to task for that? Did I ever say anything critical? The only person that's being critical is you.
Im quite happy to stand corrected if incorrect.You say the model m doesn't have a gearbox but on 27 th sept you said you opened the gearbox and got a surprise. It does indeed have a gearbox although the ratio is fixed.
It is this box that should be oil filled.
If you look at the black model m mk2 on the lathes.co.uk site you'll see what a difference properly cleaning the unpainted areas makes. A lot easier to do than all the work involved in repainting.
But if one takes the trouble to do a full repaint which is after all to make it look pretty why not finish the job and clean off the fine surface rust?
@spencer. Images above.Well the motor bearings seem fine. Not opened it up yet.
3/4hp 1440rpm I believe. Plates a bit battered.
The original pulley has had a brass bushing machined to reduce to the newer spindle. Newer spindle looks to have had a hard life. At first it almost looked as if somebody had welded a shaft extension on. Can't machine a new bushing. No lathe. Can't reface the shaft. No lathe.
Spin the motor up and file it more uniform? Then Shim the original pulley to a snug fit. Its the source of my knock. Can hear it spun by hand and its magnified when tensioned on the lathe. Slid a new pulley on with a good fit. No knock.
They didn't put a new keyway in the bushing either. Just relied on a bolt into the shaft keyway to hold it on.
Erring towards bodge as above and purchase 3/phase vfd setup for it down the line.
