Started a knife

Shaped the scales a wee bit before I fitted them, thought it would easier. Might have to cut down on the amount of glue I use. Got a bit messy and sticky!

Hopefully we did it last night! We heated it up,quenched it then let it cool, then heated it up till it went straw colour. It got to air cool after that. Hopefully we did it right, if not I’ll put it down to experience and start again!

It is, there's a very good BBC program on the I player. Looking at how they make the steel, a skill in itself to the making of a sword with grandad, dad and son.

Glue set, got busy. The scales are 10mm thick, I think I would prefer slimmer ones but was concerned if I took more off I would lose the roundnessof it. Rock and a hard place! Next one will have 8mm scales. I’m going to work out how to make the scales off the knife to get them as near identical as I can. These ones were nearly all done on the knife, only using eyes, feel and files.

I’ve watched a few episodes of it. The guys that compete make some cracking knives and stuff. The knife Kent made me has G10 scales and they are great. Loads of grip, even when wet. Always warm to the touch.

I would have used G10 too but was worried I would ruin it. I’ll certainly try it in the future. You’ll need to crack on with yours, I like the knives made out of files.
