the question would be how much wood would you go through

tech has come along way nowadays so its smoke free as well as economy in builds

so for a homemade one

I can make this and have a boiler part as well

Reading this thread makes me want to get a log burner installed, so I have an excuse to build a log splitter.

I hope you have a slave to do the carrying and stacking?

use a 4.5 or 5 "slitting disc and cut it at an angle instead

just when you get into it enough use a piece of packing to open it

Dam too late that would have been easier 4 hours of grinding blades

If i had thought about it I could have cut half way either side on the 45 degree and saved a straight cut. Ah well live and learn. Mrs loved the racket as I am sure the neighbours did for 4 hours

We found that having the wedge on the ram end is great till it hits a knot then kicks and bends the ram. As you’re having followers it may be alright for you - followers weren’t so great on vertical ones as they jammed.

My friend built a vertical with the cutter on the ram pushing down onto a table and it works off a JCB hydraulic power pack, It has follower on the splitting wedge to hold it to the beam and is a good home made tool. If it wasn't anchored at the wedge end the ram would lift under pressure. I filmed a bit on my phone of a piece he passed on to me that his wouldn't tackle. It was just a try out and it has been used to tackle bits that are more knot than anything else and we have not found anything it will not cope with yet, green or seasoned. It has a 4 way add on as well for bigger rounds in the vertical position. It came with one table but I made another for the other side just for convenience.

That’s nice @pedrobedro. The vertical ones don’t seem to like the anchors at the wedge end as the bits fall back and get stuck under the support. Maybe it was how it was used

as this one is going to be horizontal it’s not an issue. I saw a good one that had the bed which was box at 45 deg so the bits fell off the side easier

It's horizontal at the moment but it can tip into vertical to do big stuff. Promo video shows it but we only tilt mine for bigger stuff to save lifting.

I didn't make mine it's made by Black Tools and I've been impressed with mine. They do a 12, 18 and 22 ton version at a good price.

Ive been wanting to build one of these also. Theres some good tips in here. There are alot of videos of different versions on Youtube. One good idea i saw someone make was they used the return stroke of the ram to pull a log lift up from the floor. It was just a chain hooked onto the ram ran over a pulley if i remember right. Nice and simple but could save lifting big rounds or you could lift a few at once with it.

Thats the video. The guy fixes up lots of old machinery like tractors, excavators, graders ect its a good channel if your into that sort of thing.

You can buy whole kits from Flowfit with pipes, auto kick out lever valves, engines and pumps but that's why I ended up buying my splitter ready built.
