Update on the BR600, I did end up taking it completely apart for a reseal. The reseal by the last guy was a bit rough and when I seen the original black crank seals were still in there it was time to tear it down. (New seals are blue)

I found the flywheel key was also sheard off so had to order a good used flywheel for it. There was also some dirt inside the engine so I'm glad to clean all that out before it started and ingested that. Small debris and red silicone on the crank and bearings.

The crank, piston and cylinder bore are in like new condition zero issues and bore still has hone marks. Very pleased with that.

Engine now completely re assembled and re sealed. Timing checked and the valve clearances set.

All parts of the housing etc were also thoroughly steam cleaned today. So once the parts orders arrived for it those week I will try starting it up for the first time.

I sold on my Stihl HS45 Hedge trimmer (China made domestic model) this weekend and bought a larger upgrade one which is a made in Germany professional one said to be from Hampton court estate. Who knows but what I do know is it looks like new condition. Looking forward to receiving it.

One sided bar and I'll get a catch plate for it for topping large leylandi hedges at my house.

This HS56 arrived today. Amazing condition it's done very little hours it looks like. Runs fantastic good powerful trimmer and decent long blade on it. Needs nothing.

It will get put to work on a large leylandi hedge of mine shortly. I am going to order a genuine cather bar for it which will be especially useful for scooping off rhe trimmings from the top of the hedge.

Update on my BR600. RM were very slow in delivering the last parts. They arrived at 8.30pm last night...

It runs!



Need to put the covers on etc but pleased it is running very smooth and no weird noises or anything.

There is only one issue I can see that the carb doesn't want to go down to idle on the linkage without assistance. Once there it's OK. I think I'll take the trigger handle apart and lube that and if that doesn't help it, it may be that the throttle return spring on the carb is weak. Or maybe an external spring is missing which is possible too. Should be easy enough to sort.

I got a half hour session with it tonight. It actually started first pull when I got home too. This is why I like Stihl equipment! Very powerful blower it's a significant upgrade on my BR86. Moves leaves 20 feet away. Although I'll keep the 86 for grass clipping clearups during summer.

You know what you need to do next!

Buy a white s class estate. Paint the roof and bonnet orange and add stihl decals all round the sides. Fit orange beacons and a siren to the roof. Put a toolbox with a selection of tools in the boot along with the br600.

Put on white overalls and go racing around the streets of Cookstown shouting STIHLFIXERS along to the ghostbusters theme!

This time it will be a saab 900 turbo estate, painted orange with husquavarna stickers on it, everything else the same as the merc. This time you'll be playing ABBA songs but I'm struggling for a catchy name.
Maybe 'I will fix your saw before midnight' would work?

Would need to be a w140 though as that's the only proper engineered S class.

Now is the season for me to get back to finishing the many unfinished Merc projects. One of those is a w140 which is all welded underneath and just needs the 100% new suspension installed. Will be a nice job actually and that car should drive incredible. W140 is already a very refined chassis but one with all brand new suspension will be something else

I guess I have a Stihl fleet now too but most of it is now all upgraded so there will be less of new broken ones coming!

The long bar is great for reaching over on top since this hedge is about 6 feet wide.

Very pleased with this trimmer over the smaller HS45. Some very small tufts sticking up where the ladder was pressing in. I'll give it a final touch up with the Kombi tomorrow.

Exactly. It would already be gone except it's the neighbours hedge and she loves it. So I trim my side and she trims her side up and down like a dogs hind leg. Not a straight eye in their head

Note I did trim this hedge quite hard back. Because I want to try and slow it's advance as much as I can. Cutting this hard back where the twigs are visible is risky for losing green but at this time of year I should get away with it. If I don't, I'm not that bothered.

ah you said not buying thats nearly a gift at that price i had a hedge trimmer at near the same age parts where a bit hard to get

So far this saw is checking out to be in fantastic condition for a 1970s item. Still got its original bar - pro style with the replaceable tip. Made in West Germany.

Still has its original plastic air cleaner cover etc and inside there looks very clean like it's only been used around a house.






All of the magnesium housing is in excellent condition no damage apart from the cosmetic damage on the recoil vent.

It definitely has strong compression. Spark plug looks old and original but clean. Again supporting a very low hours saw. Spark is testing nice and strong. Fuel in it is red and doesn't smell terrible.

So I think this should start up with fresh fuel in it.

Thing is, it turns over easily by cord with the Spark plug out. With the spark plug in I can hardly pull it over at all without very strong effort. Not sure if this is normal on these old saws but to try starting it I'll need to use all my strength!

£20 was a bloody bargain!

Well ho Lee F. I cannot believe this.

I just went out and tossed out the old fuel. Added fresh.

FIRST "real man" pull on the cord it fired right up into the best, low, thumping idle I've ever heard. Choke lever off kept running. Turned it off before the neighbours phone the police again.

I ordered a new oil cap for it as that was missing. I will likely ask on here if someone can 3D print a repair section for the cover:



This saw is too nice to repaint etc. Will be left all original.

So a small repair section in white or off white 3D printed would be ideal and I would trim to suit and glue it in. I will measure the slots carefully and start a new thread to request that help which would be great to repair this survivor which I intent to keep for a very long time.

Any suggestions for a replacement black cushioned handle wrap material? I cut off the perished original rubber item as it was cracked all over and done.
