I shot myself in the foot really on Sunday, chatting to a neighbour about how stupidly complicated cars have become.

I may have said "at least the DPF hasn't given us any trouble" or similar and it must of bloomin heard me!.

Need to move FORScan and my VCM2 over to my new laptop tonight to do a regen.

I had constant grief with a Zafira diesel. Poorly designed emissions system that never really worked. It would have cost me a fortune if I had to take it to the dealership every time it went wrong.

To be fair ours is on 93,000 miles with mixed driving.

Hopefully DPF will survive, wife stopped using it when the Engine Service Now message appeared so it's got half a chance.

Given where it is and what it does 10 years is a good run for the Vapouriser.

The Fault Codes are very misleading as well, I bet plenty have just replaced the DPF (and wrecked it again).

Old 110V transformer had some shoddily installed fuse holders installed on the outputs at some point, which clearly failed and then bypassed to just get one socket up and running at some point, so stripped it all down, welded up the holes and installed a thermal overload on the input, weighs 18kg so I'm assuming 3kva intermittent / 1.6kva continuous or somewhere in that region, I can't find anything about it, been passed through the family a bit, possible ex telecom?

Nipped it in the bud, DPF_LOAD was 141% and DPF_SOOT_LD was 127% before driving.

Fitted the Vapouriser and couldn't clear the Regen Codes straight off, went for a drive and it's sorted itself out. Cleared the code and another drive and it's a clean sheet (we have an aftermarket head unit after Sync1 failed).

I didn't thrash it, just drove normally and the car burnt all a the soot out. Probably half an hour total driving.

Luckily my wife knows when it's doing a regen (fans on, instant consumption 0.5 gph, light tapping under floor) and she mentioned it was doing more than usual so that's saved it really.

A beer and a Pizza now!.

One leaky fuel tank out

One new fuel tank that had crappy paint on stripped and painted. I thought the tank started leaking 8 years ago but it turned out to be a split return hose so this has been sat on the shelf ever since.

Fitted the repaired tine holders to the Haybob with new pivot bushes/washers and the return springs from Satan, more as a reminder to me when I need to replace a return spring in a few years time

Fit tine holder with the flap pointing down, knock roll pin through just far enough to catch the return spring hook

Lift flap to horizontal position making sure the return spring is still just hooked in the pin, drift pin in further so its about equal both sides
DONT KNOCK THE PIN IN UNTIL YOU HAVE LIFTED THE FLAP TO HORIZONTAL POSITION

Last little bit on the Haybob before we can use it in anger or be be angry as we cant use because of the weather!!! anyhow the headstock stand had been proper farmered

even the tube it slides up and down in was out of shape

Ive no heat so ive either got take the headstock off to find something hard to smash it about on or improvise

with that sorted I dug out a bit of galv malleable iron pipe the perfect size, not very strong but if it does bend it will be a gentle bend!

recycled the foot plate with a nice hot weld, ran away after welding to let the fumes dissipate!

Ooooh fire in the hold!!!!!!!!

recycled one of the old tines into a locating pin

jobs a goodun, not sure why its at a jaunty angle, I guess something else is probably bent/twisted

My one was missing the divider like yours and I made one. The original was spring loaded with a torsion bar inside. The replacement uses a long tension spring so it can move if it hits something solid. Let me know if you need photos if they are on my haybob post. I don't know if it is needed or not as the previous owner didn't need it and they seem to be missing or broken fairly often.

I noticed the S1 wasn't cutting through properly yesterday. I checked on the maintenance schedule and apparently you are meant to clean it every 2 to 4 hours

Last bit on the Haybob, the PTO shaft had a lot of play one end, bit of knocking about got it to bits

Dont think there were any rollers in 2 of the cups

Luckily they seem to be the same as 60s/70s Vauxhalls which I keep in stock, no grease nipple though so we will see how long it lasts

back together and feels nice, ready for a test now, just got to find some hay!

Been on with a BMW K75 Bobber this week on and off.

Came in with battery failure and luckily with a new battery it did run but fuel pump constantly running.

Digging around in fuesbox area found a melted wire, the tip of the iceberg..

After looking through the wiring diagram and pondering BMW's wisdom I still couldn't work out why they've wired it like this.

Basically the lighting supply is branched off the Load Sheading Relay, this relay is supplied UNFUSED directly from the battery. The wire that runs the entire lighting system, buried in the harness is UNFUSED.

Needless to say if anything goes wrong with anything in the lighting system (dead short at worse case) it has the possibility of this wiring sinking 200 amps from the battery.

Something did go wrong so had to strip the entire loom down and replace any damaged wires (there was a few!).

Re-wired all the lighting into a completely seperate loom with a dedicated 15 amp fuse now!.

I'm just amazed how BMW let this out of the factory like that, there is even a spare socket in the fusebox that could have been used for a lighting fuse..

Unfused lighting used to not be uncommon.
The argument was it was too expensive/impractical to fuse individual lights, and if you used a single fuse, then a relatively minor fault could lead to suddenly being plunged into complete darkness, which isn't the kind of thing you really want at road going speeds.

Managed to get back onto the Norton Dominator today.

It's had a fair bit of work done to the engine apparently, 750cc.

I broke my heel years ago and normally only gives me a bit of jip in winter but this bike is a bloomin beast to kickstart and feeling it tonight!.

If anyone got any leads for a longer kickstart I'd be interested to know as the owner's had similar issues trying to kick it off (to be fair it never ran for more than a few seconds).

On my 73 750 highrider when I bought it in 74 it would kick the hell out of me when starting the mechanic had no idea seeing as how the timing checked out. Looking at it myself I found the auto advance unit was worn to the point it would never be in the same spot twice causing the backfire/kickback.

Mine was easy (once I figured it out) to start try bringing it up to compression and keep some pressure on it you’ll feel the kickstarter dropping lowering the compression give it a light kick and your on your way.
