This arrived today. A replacement handle/tank assembly for my hedge trimmer.

£5 spent on a new fuel hose, some assembly, and it was running - NOT!
The secondhand piece had come with all the bits barring a pickup filter, and who forgot that there should be one?
After retrieving the filter from the damaged tank, and spending some time trying to fiddle the pipe through far enough, it was eventually back together.

Now it runs

A bit different..........made a twirly wheel thing for a set of spurs.
The fixing bolts (M4) were broken so had to weld nuts to the remains to remove them. Ones in at the mo are temporary.

evri you really need to stop dunking packages in the river......

anywho. the p/s window regulator stopped pulling the glass up square so it jammed unless 'assisted' having taken it apart i found one of the worm drive cables broken away from the motor housing so it just extends itself there rather than driving the glass.

so i bought a cheap one from autodoc. all i had to do was swap the motor over and fit it. but i was astonished to find, the cheapest aftermarket regulator i could find is a BETTER design than the factory one. broken factory one on the left, the new one has reinforcement to stop the worm drive cable flexing and breaking the outer.

a much better design.

will fit it tomorrow before i go pick up a car i just bought. again......

Fitted new hinges to the bathroom upvc window and cured the howling banshee noise. I was struggling till my wife suggested taking the glass out, made it much easier to manoeuvrer and better access to the screws.

Managed to get back onto the Norton Dominator today.

It's had a fair bit of work done to the engine apparently, 750cc.

I broke my heel years ago and normally only gives me a bit of jip in winter but this bike is a bloomin beast to kickstart and feeling it tonight!.

If anyone got any leads for a longer kickstart I'd be interested to know as the owner's had similar issues trying to kick it off (to be fair it never ran for more than a few seconds).

Stripped down my favourite sander...it was trying to rotate the pad off the bottom every time I used it.

Yup you've guessed...bearings stuffed full of crud. I think it's been used to sand wet 2 part filler grrrr (lent out!).

Ordered a full bearing which was £50...quicker than faffing about ( thinking I'd later repair this one). Then decided to clean this one in alcohol....yup you've guessed it...runs perfectly!

I'll regrease it before fitting...keep the new one as a spare!

You're not wrong...it was spinning fine until the cleaner evaporated!

On closer inspection the crud was forced into the seal and has damaged it so new grease won't stay new for long...the new part is going in and this one will get a new bearing .

Lesson learned!

The magnet rotor slipped on the motor shaft and jammed up on my resin printer wash station - it's a bit like one of the laboratory magnetic stirrers, rotating magnets magnetically coupling to a stirrer in vat of IPA.

Spot the appalling design flaw....that's a grub screw tightening onto the 'D' section motor shaft. The plastic is probably a high glass fill - it's incredibly stiff but also brittle. The red highlights cracks




Whilst I wait the 10-20 days for the replacement to arrive, apparently now aluminium alloy, I thought I'd repair this one.

Turned the hub down on the lathe and epoxied a steel tube reinforcing sleeve over it....works a treat.

That'll be a permanent fix.

We are two engineers down, they are sans transport, so i was on call.

So a day of pottering.

A few tools left as a donation.
This gave me a chance to play, learn and draft up methods of saving old tools.

All the all metal tools got a Citric acid dunking.

This was found in the de-rusting tank, so it made friends with this.

The head was given a tumble in a drum polisher.

A new wedge was made from an off cut of hardwood.

A happy marrage.

This Primmer tool bimbled my way.

In bits. It was a sneaky tool.
It hid a tiny, invisible grub screw holding the body to the base.
Dan thing.

Fixed, I use the term loosely, my SIL’s lawn scarifier….the whole rotating drum was seized….after a strip down and clean its now back working….after 25 yrs…cheap black n decker thing…gear driven too, would you believe?
Sorry, no pics, as I did it at their house with minimum tools….hammer, water pump pliers and Philips screw driver and wd40……

New to us Haybob, its been "farmered" so lots of wear and as usual no maintenance but it was the right price! just going through it making it all work hopefully...
Stripping of the tines/return springs/pivot blocks and replacing what needs replacing which is most of it!

The tyres are flat with perished tubes so the wheels will get some love along with wheel bearings, is there meant to be that much play!
Thats not camera angle the inner race moves side to side about 5mm

Split into its constituent parts for my father

He's found a suitable lump of aluminium to machine a replacement bearing hub to take a more readily available bearing.

Given the ****ty little diecast arms to hold on the track tensioner were £150 he decided not to bother even asking about the price of the hub assembly.
