No, most bolts act as a fastener - this screw is acting a lead screw - and contrary to most of the complaining on here about accountants rather than engineers designing cars, you appear to be complaining a correct engineering solution was used . . . I would argue the accountant still won as they didn't add an anti-seize compound - nor, by the sound of it, did any of the owners . . .

Yesterday not today, thought I ought to makes sure I could get the wheels off of the combo that I bought in September. Wheels all OK, but go to drop the spare. 2 hours later, heat and plus gas later, I have removed the spare, for most likely the first time it left the factory... thread was a little galled, so removed the bolt. 12mm 1.5 pitch... found a suitable die nut and spent a good 10 mins trying to start it on the undamaged end before I realised it was actually a twin start 3mm pitch...... WHY?

Perhaps because there isn't an M12 x 3mm pitch

Is it likely to be more reliable than an M12 x 1.5 thread in use, no lube, ignored until needed etc? Does it being a twinstart mean it might cross thread less easily, the two threaded parts will sit more evenly when first put together.

Had a tub I threw blunt drills in so after 10 years or more I decided finally to go through them as was starting to get quite heavy at least 100 in there

I bought a drill grinding jig years ago but never tried it so after some googling and youtubing set it up on an old grinder i was given and gave it a go



Side of the wheel i know but thats how they are meant to be set up and with light passes you really are in no danger of digging in or the wheel exploding



very pleased with the result and was really easy on the jig not taking too long at all

I know people will say doing it by hand just as quick but it makes getting it consistent so easy

I do mine by hand, but they're never very good, and some of them are now very short because I have keep re-doing them. I've got one of those sharpeners, but only the holding bit, not the stand. I'll be looking at your photo in more detail at some point when I try to replicate that part.

im replacing the gearbox in my new merc c220 due to its refusal to go into reverse or 2nd. a very common fault and the reason i got the car so cheap.

i found a rear main seal leak so i had to remove the clutch and flywheel to repair it.

so having removed a self adjusting clutch, i now have to reset it. and im not buying a £100+ tool just to reset 1 clutch. the tool resets the clutch by compressing the 'fingers' of the clutch until it is totally unloaded and then you just push the little sprung leavers back to the rest position. whilst holding it there you wind the pressure back off and hey presto, once reset clutch.

now how would i replicate that.....

one ladder clamp...

add a hole in the bench and a seal driver head...

all i then had to do is wind it down til these are free then push them into the position shown, take the pressure off and job done.

then clutch fitted...

gearbox fitted..

and a reminder left on the steering wheel.... just in case i forget...

just gotta reconnect the diff end of the prop, fill the gearbox, fit the undertray and job done.

Not quite fixed but getting there

Jeep GC ZJ failed MOT on its handbrake. It's been parked up for a year and the handbrake was rubbish before it was parked up.

Fitted new handbrake shoes, springs, retainers and adjusters, set it all up but stupid me didn't test it and it failed


Bedded in the new shoes, adjusted and then back for retest and it failed again! My bad for not checking it's holding power

Old brake discs we not too shabby but I have 2 new pairs on the shelf so dug them out and sprayed the bells with some heat resistant enamel

Cooking nicely and yes, SWMBO is home but upstairs so not aware they are in the oven

Managed to make a 3x3 out of the tangled remains of the 3x6, just need to be a bit creative with the cover now!

Today I fixed one of my a Petzl Pixa 3R head torches

The battery was stuffed, so I went online looking for a replacement and they want £35 odd.
I'm not paying that so I robbed the battery from one of the cheap Chinese head lights that are everywhere at the moment.
This one cost me £5.

I removed the battery and soldered it to the terminals.

I couldn't get the battery lid back on but it's a tight fit so that's no problem.

It charges on the original docking station to do I'll call that job done.

Historically the tailgate on the 6x6 hinged off some brackets welded onto the chassis. This was annoying, particularly as I'm making the bed detachable so I found some channel in the scrap pile that was a decent fit inside the other channel. Drilled and bolted it and then bolted on the hinge pins.

There's a few mods that need doing which will involve welding but as it's a fully welded 8x5.5ft all aluminium bed out of minimum 8mm thick channel it needs some power. So will batch things up and take it around to a make who has a 450A tig.

Since all the key parts have finally turned up for the old rough terrain forklift, I figured I better start with fixing the cracks on the rear axle carrier.

Top side was fairly easy, and my welds weren't too bad considering it's been a while since I've used any rods-


Bottom side however was a bit of a different story, and didn't look too bad initially-


But that crack up the left hand side down and across at quite an acute angle, and after grinding/burring sideways over an inch, I gave up chasing the crack-



And welded it-




It's been cracked since we bought the forklift over 10 years ago, so I'm settling for the "good enough" approach

Last few months I have been involve in gathering tools and such so a local town museum can put on a temporary display to celebrate its coal history, the wanted to show the route coal took from the Coal yard to the home.
Most of the items on our list were easy to find.
Coal shovel, fireside set, coal scuttle, coal bucket. Even a coal bunker.
For the coal yard side we had all but a pick axe. Yes I know we could of given them you standard pick axe. We even acquired a coal mine pick, shovel, coal points etc. But a Coal yard long handle pick was hard to find.
But........

We had this in the Scrap pile.

It was no use as a pick axe, but we hoped the point end could be reformed into a coal pick axe. We had historical images and photos of the style of pick we needed.

As traditional coal yards died of the tools were lost. I recall 2 coal yards in my home town. Plus the coke factory and gasometers.

Chisel point reformed, hardened and tempered.

This is what's made this a Somerset Coal pick, the shape of this end.

As I said we could of given them a normal pick axe, as we knew the old coal workers would be invited, we had to try to get it right.

Tghe handle was cleaned up. here it is being drowned in Linseed oil.

All done, now with the town council.

This was done by a MIS member. It was a good jib, but the final paint leaves me wondering.

De rusted, the striking end reformed and now ready for primer.

But...........

That will be lost in the dark corners of the Shed.

How long is the handle? Some were specced at 36" long so they could be used for measuring too.

Good question, one I will be answering in the future, when I have gone and measured it.
