If you are doing it for fun or scrap value it looks good.First tests melting ali, have only done lead previously aka poor mans gold as I call it

If for machining you need to heat your moulds, then top up. It stops a lot of the shrinkage you can see.
View attachment 339144owned this for seven years and after the initial work its been great with little to no issues
Is it Sunday already?
You might remember that cool thing I was making
You dont want the mold hot, just be sure it is dry and let it cool off to ambient before pouring.
I've tried that at the beginning, thinking the same and had bad results, then I did some reading up. For thick sections you should cast against a cold chill. Gives smaller grain and no porosity or shrinkage.no experience with casting here... but I always thought mould as hot as possible was the best bet? and let the pour cool as slowly as possible?
maybe stick a lid on it after the pour to keep the heat in?

When solid, heat treatable alloys should be water quenched then heat treated for best results.
Did that for the rest, now need more scrap ha.
Only need to make 44od 35mm long rollers, mold is 80mm long so should be able to get 2 out of each slug
