I have failed.....

Confession time. I finished the splitter and went to test it with a bit of properly season wood, using both my drill and impact driver as the motive power. Got about 1.5" in and the jack buckled where I've shown in red in the following pic.

Wedge then turned sideways a good bit and looking at it, the jack isn't up to the job and I'm just going to 'rescue' the bits of pipe and scrap the rest. Not going to attempt any 'rebuild'/redesign. Cost me only the MIG wire, gas and time so no great loss. A bit disappointed to be honest, but Hey...Ho​

Cut some blocks of horrible plastic (Seem to have broken my circular saw doing so!) and squared them up in the lathe.

Done, wall mounts for the ZEIlympus microscope project. I'll glue some m8 stud into the brickwork and get it mounted above the bench s

I never got around to screwing these to the wall, because I couldn't decide where best to put it, it needs to be over a bench but preferably away from grinding dust, then I got distracted and left it somewhere safe until I needed it again. Today I bored the blocks out a bit bigger and split them to clamp onto a bit of stainless pipe which happened to be a nice sliding fit on the Olympus shaft, then screwed the whole thing to my desk.





Seems to work quite nicely there, just need to make a nice pin to replace the screwdriver, and have another go at making a controller for the focus and zoom motors. I also need to finish machining an M18 fine thumbscrew. There's a stop between the two Olympus parts that limit their rotation to about 240 degrees, I might saw/file it away so it can fold up a bit more compactly.

When I'm not using it I can take it all off and put it somewhere out of sight, it's just those plastic blocks that'll stay on there.

Yesterday afternoon I made a new window appear in the garage

the old

and new . As usual with the crappy garage they'ed just bricked over the window so a bit of 75 x 50 x 6 i couldn't get the bearing I would have liked because of the crappy bond in the brick work ! but it's 60 mil ish each side ,It's more as a bit of safety it's not carrying must weight just didn't want the brickwork sagging /cracking .

just need to decide whether or not to replace the other window or cut in a side door .
Btw it was really hot too !

They're around 2-3mm away from it it's quite solid I suppose time will tell, first time working on a radiator of any sort rivnuts would be my last worry some of the welds are really bad, I'll not name the company there's welds on top of welds so obviously found a leak or 2

ah looked a lot tighter than that in the photos :-)

Built a small work bench to fit next to the mill out of stainless offcuts, and fitted the drawers from the old bluepoint trolley underneath. Was lazy and didn't mitre the tops.
I also made some extra long slotted end stops from some 200x20mm flat bar. All of this was yesterday.

I painted 3 bedrooms , what a pain , the walls were so hot the wet edge was dry by the time I wetted the roller , then the paint went lumpy before I could find where to start again ,,, the perfectly good tin of oil based gloss had turned into minestrone soup over night , with lumps and grit in it , yesterday it was like glass ,,, then my fave harris brush decided to go '' hollywood'' all the hairs just kept falling out ,,,, so I went back to plastering ,, bonus is the render went on well and dried nicely too ,,, some days you win and some days your the landlord.

Greenhouse to water butt adapter, version 2.

The first one I made wasn't quite as neat, and didn't curl around the outer rounded edge at all. With the (temporary) use of rubber heater hose to connect to the butt, that would lead to it lifting sometimes, so this second version holds in place better. There's no welding involved - it's a piece of aluminium sheet cut and bent to shape, with a nylon top-hat thing bonded underneath (the first version was bonded on top, a more secure way but had a step up for the water to overcome), a short length of 15mm copper pipe bonded inside it, and the rubber hose connected to it. Bonded using pound-shop two-pack epoxy adhesive. A bit of mastic to smooth the path, and seal it a little bit, as it sits inside the gutter and therefore there's a step up.

It's possible to buy these, but seemingly not for the profile of gutter on our greenhouse. The lean-to has the same gutter shape (probably the same manufacturer) and has a proper thing on it, so the must have been available at one time, but all the ones I've seen since are too big and the wrong shape.

I spent the day doing my M18 screw, I'm really happy with how it came out. Original on the right, new one on the left.



I cut the thread and roughed out the head yesterday, I just wanted to get the thing assembled. Today I cut a face groove to take an HDPE washer, then machined a block of HDPE into a short tube to part off said washer.




Then onto the grip on the head, I was originally just going to knurl the top, I don't have a rotary table or a ball nose endmill so I didn't think I'd be able to match the grooves but I realised it's just a ring of 25, quarter inch holes, so I worked out the hole centres on paper and drilled them out one by one. Back to the lathe for a generous chamfer, deburr with some 600 grit paper and it's finished.



Little side project there, I made a couple of M6 Tee nuts to hold the chuck to the mill table.



Looks like this in position, the washer acts as a thrust bearing so it can articulate smoothly and it prevents the joints from coming apart unintentionally.
