Some true bodgery going on today. With the JCB out for the count at the moment a length of scaffold bar was welded to the ever versatile A frame on the back of the wee tractor.

Prior to me "acquiring" it from my parents where it was part of a PTO powered duck plucker (don't ask!). Then I bolted a tow ball to it to make shunting trailers around in tight spaces nice and handy. A month or two ago I welded on a piece of scaffolding tube (previous owner's swing frame ) which could then accept my DIY netting unroller. Today I welded on another piece of scaffold bar that allows me to pick up the bucket (possibly) and the pallet forks I made for the JCB. No locks yet or guides so they're liable to slide off sideways but at least I can easily move light pallets around.

Tried moving the little one's sand pit and she pulled a wheelie but was able to drag it around. Tried picking up the pallet with the JCB engine on it and pulled a wheelie and that was about it. So definitely light weight pallets but handy none the less. If I can get the bucket off the JCB then I'll see whether she can lift that up because it's not a lightweight bucket.

Short version - I saw the Whizz Bang chicken plucker on GazTube and built one for Mum's Christmas Present, Mk1 used a washing machine motor and bearing, showed promised but basically wasn't powerful enough. So the decision was made to up the motor size slightly - the most convenient being the PTO off the back of the tractor.


In fairness it did away with having to waterproof the electrics, motor and so forth. We bought that little frame as it was only £50 and saved the faff of making one, went at Dad's old topper rusting away in the field and liberated a beautiful 90° PTO gearbox, mounted the spinny thing on the upside down gearbox, welded up a frame to the A-frame and attached it to Dad's wee 40hp SAME tractor (well full-size but an old one). Forgot that his PTO clutch is seized on so you have to start / stop the tractor to start/stop the PTO.

We did try it on a little Kubota I had for a while and the conclusion was 540rpm was too fast, needed to be more like 1-300 RPM. So a broken stub of a PTO shaft was sourced from a local tractor repair place, I welded it to a plate that could be bolted on instead of a wheel from a Corsa we had lying around the farm as a development vehicle for some remote control power steering, jacked up one wheel and I was operator in the Corsa, 15mph was the ideal speed. Anyway that worked reasonably well but we've subsequently found a spinny finger plucker thingy in a mains drill is far more effective even if I do end up looking like I've been tarred and feathered.

It will probably go to my Niece, save her dragging her brother out of the Landrover! I’ll be keeping it for a wee while yet though, as I’d like to take it to a couple of car shows. I think the dogs are fed up being used for scale!

There could well be a mini Model T in the near future.. certainly near the top of my project list!

This afternoon I made some space on the bench to get on with a few bits

first I broke in the new diamond stone with an old plane iron

knocked up a guide for setting the angles on the honing guide there will be a MK11


then with a bit of thick formica and some old leather made a double sided strop same size as the stone


and then a bit more polishing up of some old rusty dollies

and a bit of tidy up in the top of the top box

altogether quite productive . I'm going to get rid of the blue point socket tray it takes up to much room !

Knocked up a wine glass tray for a friend to hang on their railings, welds are a bit scruffy but as I’ll almost certainly not be paid for this I’m not bovvered. All 25mm x 3mm flat. I didn’t think the brackets through enough though, doesn’t look quite right.

Replacing the fuel lines on the chainsaws I have been fixing, I found the long nose pliers to short to get to the bottom of the tank without the handles hitting the edge of the filler hole. There was nothing available in the local shops on a Sunday and short of raiding the hospital operating theatre....
I got a set of the cheapest long nose pliers I could find around the house and did a cut and shut on the handles. Worked well. I might give them a tidy up and paint one day, maybe.
