Are you going to put a lip round the shelf to stop bits dropping off?

Wasn't planning on it. Haven't even dropped anything off the headstock yet with the lathe running so should be OK. I can get behind the lathe if I do drop anything.@dan.taylor.1

Taking a metalworking lathe on holiday
Made mine from stainless, didn't knurl them as they hit the wall when swinging around.Something else I managed to rip off this week:

That will make a wonderfull wind chime.....Made myself tired and sore welding 28 half links to the top of 28 full links, getting too old for this kind of stuff. To give an idea of scale the small half links are 1" dia. and the big links weigh 48kg each.

Moral of the story. Never argue with a Fife fisherman. They have a boat and some very heavy weights. To give an idea of scale the small half links are 1" dia. and the big links weigh 48kg each.

Readers of a nervous disposition should look away now. This post contains farmer welding...
Replacing the fuel lines on the chainsaws I have been fixing, I found the long nose pliers to short to get to the bottom of the tank without the handles hitting the edge of the filler hole. There was nothing available in the local shops on a Sunday and short of raiding the hospital operating theatre....
I got a set of the cheapest long nose pliers I could find around the house and did a cut and shut on the handles. Worked well. I might give them a tidy up and paint one day, maybe.

Good idea. I'm planning to put together a gooseneck lamp with a switchable magnetic base to work either on my lathe or my mill.Fit this lamp I got from a @Maker ages ago above the lathe this morning, also got the stainless shelf I've had sat about for god knows how long mounted to get some stuff off the tip of the headstock...
It swings totally out of the way, it's ex nhs I believe. I bought one of these recently for £23 to put on the drill press, they do them with mag bases. Might not be worth making one for that price tbh...Good idea. I'm planning to put together a gooseneck lamp with a switchable magnetic base to work either on my lathe or my mill.
These are a bit more spendy, but they're very good indeed. Magnetic base and clamp base; powered off AAA batteries or USB or mains; adjustable light focus for narrow beam or broad spread:It swings totally out of the way, it's ex nhs I believe. As you said, it might not be worth the bother/expense to make one. I was looking at some lights with switchable magnetic bases on Amazon and eBay the other day, and I might go that route. However, I do have a couple of spare light sockets with aluminum shades that would allow the use of standard US Edison-base (screw-in) LED bulbs, the advantage being a larger/softer light source for more diffuse shadows. 'Toughened' plastic- or rubber-coated bulbs are available. I have a rubber (silicone?) coated LED bulb in my blasting cabinet that has stood up to a lot of abuse. It swings totally out of the way, it's ex nhs I believe.
