Well, a totally chaotic day today, started three jobs and finished one
Thought I would start by getting that lump of steel in the mill and squaring it up:


It was well out, but it came right:





Then set my X and Y zero's:



Whilst going back and forth on the manual Mill I decided to set a job up in the lathe, I managed to get the collet chuck in before I remembered I needed the three jaw in:



abandoning this idea for a minute I decided to get a job set up in the little CNC, first up, some way of mounting the job. I decided to fasten the plate I would use to the sacrificial using countersunk screws:



This turned into a disaster, somewhere along the line the drilling program defaulted to 12.7 mm (Bobcad, known bug) and I am just learning so managed to put a mark of shame in the table, I watched it do it, mesmerised like a bloody snake, then I snapped out of it and hit the emergency stop.

So the lathe job turned out okay, it is a tool to measure offset:



You mount a dial gauge in it :



then it goes over the spigot to measure the protrusion underneath. Been meaning to make one for a while now.

A mess ,a complete mess .
Yesterday my brother decided to celebrate the "Angel Monday" (the monday after Easter) in our land in the woods ,so I've had to dig out a table from the storage room.
He then decided to go inside and make a complete mess opening boxes and leaving them around ...
So I got upset,edit angry as hell.
So I've taken the situation in (out of really) control and started to moving (throwing) everything outside and started to separate what's garbage and what's not.
Dismantled my homemade welder and saved the biggest microwave transformer to make an wire wound inductor for the CEA welder project (which I actually have most parts for it )
Get rid of two drills because one isn't worth any time or effort in repair and the other one was an accurately well stored piece of junk .
Thrown a lot of cardboard power tools boxes including the ones belonging my inverter welders (just taking space for nothing)
A two cylinder air compressor pump because not worth to keep since I've never done anything with it in 5 or so years I have it living on the shelf, taking place as well.
Plus it's only capable of 200 litres minute and that's was in 1956 when it has been produced.
A bunch air compressor related parts which I really don't need, and if I need them a day I'll just buy new ones.
Discovered that the Fein foundry grinder I've bought few weeks ago by mistake of course, has a grenade armature so that's why it doesn't work.
Impossible to find the parts for it
I might be lucky in the future and find maybe a power drill motor I can fit in it (very hard but not impossible) , reducing the RPM too which would allow me to use bench grinder wheels in it (it will have a guard anyways) , I've decided to keep it .
Anyways a load of garbage stored for years and actually good stuff laying around and getting ruined or lost.
I'm actually going to get rid of many useless stuff.
I always get surprised by the amount of garbage is stored in the storage room.
Actually it's well stored too like the burnt drill .
Both amazing and hateful because it's not stuff I stored myself and both my father and my brother always have to say I keep bringing useless stuff at home when they store even used paper cups from the job sites .

A brass thing for the grate riddling mechanism on the stove. Trying to get rid of as much of the chrome/nickel fittings as possible. Already made new door hinge pins, air control levers/rods from brass, & replaced those. Acorn nuts replaced with brass. This, bar the door handles, is pretty much the last part to sort. Bottom one is the replacement.

Removed the wire harness from the engine bay in my punto.
Checked this morning.
Found out
Hit and miss continuity on the knock sensor wires
Hit and miss continuity on the crankshaft position sensor wire
No continuity at all between common ground from the ECU to every single fuel control system sensors (Crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, map sensor, TPS, idle motor ,lambdas )
I need a new harness ideally, but has a code which is hard to find there are similar ones which can fit but might have differences in the pin out positions on the ECU .
I don't think it's worth the effort to repair the one I have
But it still an option if I don't find the correct harness

At least you're getting somewhere now!
With so many faults I'd check all the ground points as it seems something common to all these things has failed.

Ended up buying one for 80 euros it should be compatible because iaw 59F ECU family have all the same identical pinout.

I got up this morning, bit of a result again and by ten thirty I was in front of the lathe, finished an hour ago, absolutely drained, but I was quite productive:
Chucked a bit of .303 barrel in the machine:




.303 Chamber reamer and off we go:



Bit more to it than just making a big hole:



This is a headspace guage and the .303 Brit round is a rimmed cartridge so it headspaces from the rim, when I was happy with it I machined it parallel and left a bit in the middlefor some knurling, set the knurl to 20mm and it came out okay, not perfect but okay:





Did more than one though and more than one caliber:



Very much winging it and when I had done I machined 3 thou off part of the end so you can check max and min. As these are made using my chambering reamers I can offer these to the people whose rifle I have rebarreled and they are making the ammunition to their exact chamber.

Made some brackets up to upgrade the depth gauge I had fitted to the TS head.




Also made fittings for the lathe compound and ordered an encoder head and more magnetic tape from AliExpress.


Slotted a piece of alloy bar to take the magnetic tape and stainless cover.

Today I made a simple aluminium ring with a 36.9 mm through hole:

I've got a (rather expensive, but generally very good) oil can, but the oil seal doesn't seem very well thought out. Having made the ring, I mounted the body of the oil can in the lathe and got it running true with a bearing tool in the tool post (photo taken after swapping the bearing tool for a cutting tool, obviously):

I then skimmed the first 10 mm of the outside down to 36.9 mm (it was 37 mm at the rim, tapering up at about 3° included angle):

A bit of superglue joined the two bits together:

Once the superglue had been left for 5 minutes or so to do its thing, I took some gentle cuts to machine the face to length, machine the outside and also to cut a small rebate on the face to match the diameter of the stock seal:

A quick test-fit before removing it from the lathe seemed a good idea:

The oil seal still bears on the rim of the can itself, but the aluminium disk supports the outside better and hopefully that'll result in fewer damaged seals.

First batch of TIG torch holders deburred, folded and assembled tonight. I made a folding jig for the awkward parts and it works really well. Also works for the really short leg on the straight front plate, i can cleanly fold a 7mm leg on 2mm stainless here which I'm pretty pleased about.

Nice bit of turning what will you use when the glue deteriorates ?

I use the empty washed out squeezy 150 ml hair dye bottles our Ukrainian gal uses when hiding the grey mare on her head . If I drop one it does not damage them .
Discovered this morning that the local ladies hair dresser has a few most weeks

Dunno. Replace it with Loctite 603 probably (that's what I normally do with metal-to-metal gluing). It shouldn't matter too much if the glue does fail: as the aluminium sits on a reduced diameter bit with a (small) shoulder, it shouldn't go anywhere even if the glue fails. The oil seal is still formed by the o-ring thing pressing against the rim of the bottle. If the aluminium bit becomes loose, it'll still serve the purpose of stopping the o-ring from rolling over the edge.

I was changing the water pump on my car and the little elbow on the inlet pipe had rusted to nothing. It should look like this:

But mine looked like this:

A new inlet pipe is about £90, and several days away, so...

After drilling out the remains of the steel elbow, I was left with a hole that would take an M12 tap.

Lump of brass in the lathe, drilled part way through, turned down one end and cut an M12 thread on it. Also machined down a commercial hose barb that I happened to have.

The punch mark shows the right place to drill so that the elbow is 'clocked' right when the threaded bit is screwed into the inlet pipe.

Set up in the 4 jaw to make a hole for the hose barb:

Prepared for silver soldering - my little blowlamp needs all the help it can get.

I've got a few of those around the workshop, very handy for oil, soluble cutting fluid etc. If they can withstand the chemicals that they contain, a bit of oil should be no problem

Mostly, I've developed, sheared out, folded, and tolerably TIG welded up a semi-prototype aluminium battery tray for a particularly bespoke Norvin that I'm building for someone.
Space is in extremely short supply....

She's having a pretty rough time at the moment, so thought I'd make her a model of her 'favourite' piece of workshop equipment.

Favourite, as in scared of it after doing her nails on it one day
