Yes…it’s got to do with recoil compensation/ damping. Will make more sense when I post the rest of the photos of the bits that are related to how it works…. But I have to make them first

Mostly tig brazing up a particularly annoying part in the rear mudguard assembly of a machine that I'm dragging together out of chaos...

We used to have a brass measuring scale/pointer that you manually reset as part of firing preparations - it showed how far the barrel and breech had recoiled during firing, nominally it should have been 12 inches with a switch at about 14.5 inches to cut the loading system and firing circuits, and if things went really bad metal to metal contact happened at about 15 inches!Yes…it’s got to do with recoil compensation/ damping. Decided to fit car wheels and tyres to my topper as the fields are bumpy,hubs are 40mm diameter with a pair of oilite bushes,welded to 200 mm discs on a pcd to suit the wheels,anyone recognise their origin ? I
took them from a scrapyard 30ish years ago for a trolley I built.

Added a thin ply top to where the bench drill sits, so as to save stuff dropping through the gaps between the slats when I'm drilling. It's a piece from the crate the chipper came in.
I'd placed the drill atop a stool on the floor whilst I did it. It's a heavy bugger, the drill. Started lifting it back up onto the bench after I'd done that, (and bear in mind this is a very confined space spot), using proper lifting technique, back straight, knees bent, then this sod, the mounting foot:
decided, when I'm in that halfway position between the stool & benchtop, to hook itself under my right nad. I can honestly say, that's not a fun situation to be in. Do you continue up or go back down? Safe lifting technique went out the window at that point, I can tell you.
Got it back up on the bench though.

Was having a bit of a "team day" at Croft one time and my pal was first off in the car I was the change over driver at half way. He came barrelling into the pits and I jammed my helmet on and jumped into the car, he was trying to get out at the same time and all I heard was ......brakes! So I shot off up the straight and into the first corner, a right hander, shoved my foot onto the brake and........ Nothing, straight to the floor. NO BRAKES, he had cooked them. the next hour was "interesting" more like stock cars than saloon cars. I picked up some penalties using other cars to slow down. but hey! I finished and not last either. I just wonder what my consultant would say if I told him I was off motor racing the weekend. Probably have me sign some sort of disclaimer.

Mundane or not, it's time well spent! Having a good supply of flat wooden shims of various thicknesses is a huge time saver when building stuff. The tapered shim packs from the building supply store can be useful of course, but I much prefer using flat shims for most purposes. A while ago, I spent about an hour making at least 200 shims in about 10 different thicknesses in 1/32" increments. They've come in handy on many occasions.
