Ok, amateur welder struck again today.
I realised I needed clamps for welding and grinding stuff, to fit my table, so inspired by Barbie the Welder, I grabbed some scrap, a couple of scabby screwdrivers, and made myself 2 clamps.
The one on the left of the picture is almost finished off, and the one on the right, demonstrating how the clamps work, is still to be tidied up.
Not pretty, not the best welding, but another little project moving things along, and they do the job.
Just think what I could do with the contents of the cutlery drawer.

I do quite a lot of back plates for a lighting designer, usually in batches of 30 or 40. Many of them require a hole to put the wiring through. Up to now I have used a hole saw in the 1mm galve sheet. But got fed up with cleaning the flash off.
So… (drum roll..)
The ram is a 10 ton from a body kit and the dies are Stakesy's for 20 & 25 mm. Bit overkill but what was lying around.
And, Yes, I did get it wrong on the height.
I have an ABS pump from a Jeep. Neat unit with accumulator. Might see if it adapts to powering this. Otherwise I have the hand pump from the kit.
One thing I didn't expect, is that the ram is a rattle fit in the housing, so I will put in some 'alignment' bronze points. Bit like a stabilizer set up on a lathe.

That's enough mitre joints and grinding for the weekend...
I've heard it called a 'welders knot' but also known as a trefoil I believe. I'd done a 3D CAD (Inventor) plan during quieter moments at work and I'm glad I did; only three parts to make in varying quantities - and I needed the rendered image to refer back to at times! This really put Femi bandsaw through her paces and she excelled herself. I learned loads during the welding process and went a bit nuts with the grinding...
Made it from 40 x 40 x 2.5 Box section, weighs a bawhair over 3kg (CAD got it almost spot on) and ended up with three separate shapes to weld together in the end so there's three unwelded seams on the inside that I can't get to. With a bit more planning perhaps possible with two? Made a schoolboy error and there's some swarf rattling around the inside. Quite pleased with the accuracy I achieved.
And I need more clamps.

Welded in an aluminium wedge to the end of the starboard gunwale to merge with the table and then fitted some HDPE down the gunwale and on the back edge of the table.
Went for a wee sail to set up the auto pilot and then remembered to take a few snaps. Bonnie day but a dull tide so doing 19Knots one way and 20 the other, young skipper is more than happy with that and will be even happier once the MCA eventually pull their fingers out and get the paperwork to him so he can start fishing with it.

Yeah, that's a valid point... paperweight, doorstopper - a tenuous objet d'art perhaps?

Probably a bit more..
I did some wire trees for an artist a while back. She put them in an exibit in a Lisbon gallery. Sold, before the public were allowed in, for around 10x what I charged her. Fine, I got what I asked and her sketches were pretty simple, so I basicly created the work. She then wanted some other work done and the sketches were even more simple. We fell out.

Today I got all of the external welding on the boat finished and am pretty close to finishing this thing off apart from cosmetics and cutting in some holes so I can fit some hatches for storage lockers.
I have a bit of welding and cutting to finish off the strakes and a few bits to repair after the odd gust blew my gas away (I got it further into the shop so I could close the door today) and it will be time for a dunking in the local river.
Then the search for a nice outboard begins in earnest, before the summer is over and I end up not using Intil next year.
I made up a tool to allow me to pull the hull plates up to meet the strakes where they had bellied in a bit with the heat from welding the seat and rear locker compartments. Worked a treat. Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say.
