Finally got round to welding this together - have had it even since I got the welder but wanted to wait until I got the 16A supply installed so I could turn the MIG up to maximum:

Turns out that it is actually squarer than the old wooden Marples try square that I've had knocking around... that is now in the bin. Actually, I'll take it out the bin now as the metal from the blade is worth salvaging...

If anyone is interested this is the kit I bought from eBay.

Laced up a wheel today

Need to get my spoke key back from a mate before final tensioning and truing.

Nice one! I've made several wheelsets over the years and have used Roger Musson's excellent 'WheelPro' PDF download as a reference. Did splash out on a Park tension meter about ten years ago and it does make it a bit easier and more accurate BUT does also make it very easy to become totally anally retentive over spoke tension...

I was just going to wing it/watch a couple of YouTube vids but decided that I like my teeth where they are and not embedded in the ground somewhere. At about £9 it's well worth it I think (plus if you've bought it and hit a problem you can ask the man himself for advice ).

It's a 26" Stans Flow Mk.3 rim, Superstar Switch Evo hub and ACI Alpina DB spokes BTW

Got a Superstar Electro hub for the rear one off the bay of lost souls a couple of weeks back so that's next on the hit list.

Not sure what to do about spoke tension really. A tensiometer would be nice but I'm not planning to do all that much wheel building. Have you tried the spoke tension app that Park Tool do to work with the tensiometer? You can produce a very fancy little histogram type thing showing distribution of tension over the wheel. Or summat...

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a truing stand, build one or just make do with the old forks/cableties bodgeroo (which I've used a few times to straighten borked wheels)...

Can't get an OE idle valve for my car any more so updated to a later, updated design with the same flow setup from a Ferrari, had to print an adaptor, it's airtight even without clips so I'm pretty happy with that!

Nope, never bothered with the Park app - I just used the tension meter to check balance of tension around the wheel and try and even it out, etc.

In all honesty the stand is useful but I know that many people just use the forks or frame and a couple of zip ties! I'd not worry about it too much for a mountain bike wheel with disc brakes but if it was for a lightweight set of road wheels with rim brakes I'd get pretty obsessive... or just get them built for me!

Renovating the cement mixer still. The big uh.. what do you call it, cogwheel has a crack and I needed to adjust it's fit anyway:

Stick and 7018 hade some difficulty building up material:

So I swapped to Tig and filled it up. Started getting lots of spitting though.

And welding the inside of the ring:

Think this is the reason the Tig is sputtering

I think I'll go over the weld again with 7018 and bolster it, on the outside it can look as knobbly as it wants.

I had to go look, around march 2016. Old vices are very rare here, never seen one for a decent price.

I just had someone ask if the "cogwheel" is cast iron. Good question. I didn't think it was, since it seemed to flexible and not very brittle. I was able to bend it enough to grind both faces before welding without it snapping. I figured maybe cast steel or something else. I also figured that if I had welded cast iron like I did on that, it would have cracked when cooled. But it's still fine.

What say you mig welding forum?

It can be nodular cast, which is malleable and little more flexible than grey cast.

I would guess cast steel though.

Hypertherm 45xp running flat out gouging away....... didn’t miss a beat

The only nicks were from the chisel hitting the old pin out but no gouges from the plasma cutter into the housing
