Today’s job nice to get back on the tools in work
is it a section of counter for a self-service restaurant/eatery?

To be honest I use a de greaser from time to time it's overdue doing again nowI've not yet had any issues with cutting fluid causing rust, but even so I'd like to minimize the amount of cleanup I have to do, I don't like leaving puddles of cutting fluid around in the ways after I've used it, I feel it's better to just not get it where it doesn't belong on a general principle.
But the main thing, and this is just my experience, is that when you get stuff like oil or cutting fluid on a surface it turns into a magnet for swarf and crud, it can't be brushed away or blown or vacuumed away, it gets real messy and difficult to clean, how many times can I wipe the ways with a towel and it keeps coming up gray despite looking clean? Feels like you can never get it truly clean when it gets like that.
@AndersK. I used a piece of PVC used for doors

I then use a piece of kitchen towel to cover under the chuck. If it gets snagged by swarf, it just throws it into the rear tray
Been watching Project Binky by any chance ? Them lads use wiper motors to power just about everything in their workshop that they motorise.Converted my slip rolls to powered, motor is from the wipers of a vw golf. Need to pick up a few bits during the week to finish the wiring.

Heres a vice I bought today for a fiver, hope it's worth it,Model making bench for man cave , all recycled timber, beech , ash , mahogany and marine ply and holly , not long enough for joints toget bench height so all joined with 150 mm coach screws, 1200 mm long x 500 wide 830 mm high, next is a moxon type vise for it, oiled up with osmo oil, long term plan is for scale model of clinker built 27 ft whaler

Some prototyping for the lathe. I want to build some protection to prevent swarf and chips getting onto the ways. Also to protect against cutting fluid. I made the depression in the middle mainly for clearance issues, I would loose work height if I kept it straight and this lathe center heigh is only 118mm. Idea is to keep it in place with magnets. I would like another sheet metal cover over the cross slide that folded over this one, so any cutting fluid splashes would be led away. But due to the design of the compound I can only cover the slide behind the compound slide, no real way to cover the whole thing.
I think some leather pieces in the right places would help (like Gotteswinter did with his lathe), though I've also seen someone simply just use a large piece of neoprene.
Every time I use my lathe then have to clean it I often thought that some type of cover would be great. My lathe is a myford ml7 & it a pig to clean because its so small and you can't get in with a dustpan & brush. If the swarf is dry I can use a hoover but today I was drilling holes & using lots of oil so the swarf was a sticky mess!
I'll have a look at my lathe & try to design something similar to your cover.
