Thanks, mate Aye, I'm finding that out. I have had it running on test, but couldn't figure out the secret of removing the cover completely. That, and I had a couple of tapped rectangular blocks c. 5mm thick which I couldn't work out. So, a quick call to the very nice Seller and all was revealed.

The cover is a close fit past the handwheel for the Z axis and has to be turned through 90 deg with the head at its max to remove. Done & will be sorted . The blocks [which arrived taped together] were intended for different purposes a) one for under the base to connect to the stabilising[?] rod which runs down the centre of the column, and b) the other for when/if using the mill on the Myford, at the tailstock end.

Anyway, today I went on the prove I'm not safe to be left on my own. I know I posted that I wasn't going to do much, but it won't be as in-depth as the Myford got .

a) New belt ordered for the princely sum of £2.99 [already on its way], since the present one [the original afa the Seller knew] was stretched according to the 'bit of string' test.
b) Cue some general cleaning while I was in there.
c) Fitted one of the tapped blocks where it ought to have been.
d)Decided to make a start on the motor rewiring, despite not having yet chosen the type or location for an NVR. For 'demonstration purposes' [my mate is coming next week to play ] I'll have 2 x metres of new cable with a plug on the end .... . I hate with a passion the 'twist a loop in the wire & hope the nut gets enough of a proper hold on them' for electrical connections, so crimped on ring ends.
I think the motor will get a quick change of colour, but since I've not got a match for the green of the base it's likely to be rattle can matt black - still undecided on that one.
e) Cleaned up the table ways which were covered in old/hardened grease.
f) Removed the Clarkson Autolok chuck to see if by chance [fat chance] the thread on the drawbar was the same as on the ER32 taper......as I thought, Imperial v Metric ain't gonna work . so I'm still on the hunt for 10mm threaded bar with a tpi to match the ER32. Standard 10mm thread won't do it, neither will fine 1.00 so I suppose 1.25 will be the next in line.

Here's where I am atm as I stopped 'cos I was tiring, but I ought to get the wiring & motor colour done tomorrow all things being equal.

One of the neighbours knocked up the frame, I knocked up brackets for the top and bottom, and a load of ladies from the village have spent months knitting poppies!

Got back to the workshop this evening, first time since Monday evening.
Managed to make a bit of progress on the transducer housing.
Finished pocketing out the inside, had a further 35mm to go from where I stopped on Monday.

Once done I threw the sub plate into the vice and bored/tapped a couple of holes which corresponded to the housings bolt holes and then set about machining the outside shape.

Whilst it was machining away I went and got stuck into trying to sort the wiring out on the lathe.

When I went back the coolant had choked up due to the swarf blocking the coolant tray, keep saying I will do something about it but never do

This is what greeted me.

Got the coolant clear and it makes life much easier.

Finished for the night, next job is to bore/tap a plate that I can hold vertically in the vice and I can then bolt the housing to it and shape the face.

Back on the 13th Oct See Post No. 11442. I acquired a Marples Mitre clamp.

On the surface it didn't look to bad.

It wasn't to bad.
A good clean and a paint strip in Hot caustic solution to remove the bad paint job.

It showed that one of the C/sunk mounting hole had bean filled in with filler, no reason why as far as I could see. Unless it was to take a M6 C/sunk screw. But why just do one.

So I asked a friend to TIG it full and machine a new C/sunk hole.

Here it is all done.

Sadly the saws were dead.



What did for them was rust.

The steel was badly pitted and cracks were forming between the pits.



The steel was re-tempered, but it was not enough.
As you can see some teeth just vanished with the heat, some just cracked when set.

So what to do.
Junk them and save anything good.

Well.
Ish.

The handles were in good shape.
One had evidence of worm. That was treated by blasting them in a micro wave and the holes sealed.
The screws were a mix of brass and steel. But they were worth saving.
I saved the handles.

This is what I did, with help from 2 members from Men in Sheds.

I did the work of cleaning, making holes in the steel and roughing out the blanks.

The biggest saw, Tenon Back saw.



Screws not fitted, as the replacements were drying.

The handle is new, pine off cut stained with a wood stain I made.

The Closed handle Dove tail saw.


Key holder.

I think the hooks could be smaller, But it does the job. I have tweaked them straight since I took this image.

Again a replacement handle. The nuts are fixed inside the handle and screwed through from the other side.


The last saw, open handle dove tail saw was combined with another dead tool.



This dead Cross Pein.
Shaft spilt, head held in with nails. twisted head, how they did that I don't know.
So dead on the grounds of cost.
Well, again ish.

The head is not on the skew.
Just looks that way.
The toe end of the blade was dressed back to loose a jagged edge and dress it back to the backing plate od deal.

The head of the hammer was originally fixed like this.





As you can see it is doubled wedged, metal and wood.
Both made from recycled materials.

The shaft is also wedged behind as well.

Crack right through this fork/shock. Replacements not available. The bikes themselves are apparently very rare over here.

Bevelled out with the Pferd ALU burrs.

Welded with 5356.

Got the transducer housing finished this afternoon.
Threw a chunk of Titanium plate I have into the vice and bored and tapped two holes.

Fixed the housing to it, set upright in the vice and clocked it in ready for machining.

Once done I removed it and put in the vice and faced off the back.

Test fit of the transducer and ready to be sent off the the Isle of Wight.

Well today I was asked if I could make another quick hitch but this time for a hedge cutter, it needed to fit a 360 excavator as well as a jcb hence the 3 pin holes. The plate is 25mm road plate which I cut out with the hypertherm 45XP. The pins are 45mm. I have no idea of what the settings are on the new Oxford 410 mig welder so I just jumped in with both boots and lit it up. Reckon an hour or so of play time and we should have it figured out

Made this today , tools were tinsnips a hammer and a couple of bits of wood , as my pop riveter gun was lent and it seems it was a permanent loan the rivets are from little nails , the old greenhouse shelf provided the material and an offcut of rubber roofing, it an under seat tool, stuff , tray for my landy, the size and design dictated by the shelf size, fits ok,

Nice work but I don't like the way that cylinder of gas is sitting unsupported in the middle of the floor with the gas hose looping across to the welder. Just the right height to trip on & pull the bottle over, at best busting the regulator at worst - who knows!
