Because my shed heater will be exhausting through the wooden side [unlike some who go through blockwork], and I understand the pipe gets quite hot, I turned a heatsink from a bit of ali round bar.



It was strange turning the bar, it kept 'grabbing' the tool and didn't seem to matter which spindle speed or feed rate I tried - I was using WD-40 as a lube and a selection of cutters. Never had this problem before.

Progress on setting this up is a bit slow, be better if I had a heater and didn't have to keep coming back inside to give my hands & feet a chance to restore feeling.......

I had checked and thought they were spot on centre - compromised sight means that either of the above could have been the case. Having drilled the centre bore, it was difficult to be sure without removing the work-piece and check with a 'pointy thing'.

Do you not nip a steel rule between the work and the tip of the cutting tool? If it's vertical, the tip's on centre, if it's leaning towards the work it's high, away it's low, quick way to get pretty damn close!

I usually set to the 'pip' left after facing off.

I like this idea, that's another thing I can add to the 'I'll make that some day' list, along with a bearing press, welding cart, gas bottle trolley, etc.

One drawback that I see it that you are cutting full depth with the disc all the time which tends to wear the disc quicker. A way of adjusting the grinder height would be an improvement so you can feed the grinder down as the disc wears, unless you have already done that of course!

The hardest part of making that would be finding a straight length of box as your guide rail. Most of the stuff around here is Chinese steel & is rarely straight or square!

I made the big hut electrics work by fitting the final outlets, and wiring up the fusebox. Dragged the big toolbox through, and sorted through even more tools (but these ones are for keeping).

One more day should have everything in its final place, and both huts usable. It has only taken 5 months.

Possibly a world record, compared with some workshops.

Today I made a board up to (hopefully) interface between the CNC controllers outputs and the turrets servo drive inputs. The other half, when done with be for servo outputs to CNC inputs.

Today I spent at home, hiding in workshop.
House was full off humans(Ish) I did not want to interact with.

So Job one.



This old Tenon saw.
It looked good, straight blade, but when I cleaned the handle, worm was found and one fixings was rusted almost away.


Blade cleaned with citric acid and a wire brush.
The handle was recovered from another dead saw. Cleaned and oiled.
Fixings are a mix of old Roves and nails used as rivets.

I had to turn a block of wood to make round drum sander to get into the curves.





Job Two.

This Dovetail Saw was in good shape. But.


The picture does not show the brass back was loose.
So strip the blade of handle, fixings were destroyed, sad fact about that.
The back was removed and blade de-rusted and the brass cleaned.
Then the blades was left on ice and the brass warmed until a hint of copper colour was seen on it. The two were put together and using a hardwood paper roller and a lot of hand pressure it was pressed flat against the blade.
First time I have ever tried this.


The handle is wax and oiled, old fixings from my spares bin.

Both saws were set and sharpened. The Tenon saw is a heavy saw, but cuts well. The Dovetail saw is a nice tool to use to cut hardwood.
The plans are is to set the teeth to cut plastic.

So a raid of my "Odds n Sods" parts was called for.



My results of a magnet fishing bit of fun.

The hammer, what a shade, but it was a horrible handle to use.
So.


It came off.



Head fitted onto a Hickory shaft, single wedged. But I tired a "2 Pack fixing" glue a friend sent from Ohio.
It gets mixed, then applied into hole. Shaft driven in and the wedge fitted dry. The 2 pack fills any voids in the head.
I never had a head fall off when I refit a shaft, so I will have no idea if it is any good.



The axe. The shaft was to far gone. Loose and no attempt to secure worked.



Off with the paint and rust. Shop brought shaft, home made beech wedges.

The blade took a very keen edge, the shaft is hickory and the wax/oil mix did stain it a nice dark shade.




Steeping overnight in Linseed oil.

Yes, that is one of the screwdrivers I acquired, cleaned up, in use and sporting a nice red paint stain.
