I finally got around to doing something with the fathers old .22 rifle. Its been sat at the back of the cabinet in a sorry state for years. The fore sight ramp had been knocked off at one point, but i had it, so decided to solder it back on.
I tinned both barrel and sight and smeared plenty of flux on both. The usual professional way to hold things in place for soldering is soft iron wire, of which i had none. So i used a toolmakers clamp and a small level to make sure it was in line with the rear.
As i was at it, i moved the sight ramp back about 1/2" or so. When i had the soldering finished and cleaned up. I put the whole thing in the lathe and screwcut the end of the barrel 1/2"unf. I was at a funeral years ago when an old boy came up to me and asked was i still into shooting, when i said yes he handed me a little box. I opened it later and found it was an old Parker Hale steel moderator. Never used it, so why not now ?
Anyway the threading went well, hardest part was holding the tapered barrel in the four jaw chuck and supporting the other end, i used a plastic bush that was a tight fit around the action and in the lathe spindle and some copper pipe in the chuck.
Took the job out of the lathe and put it back together and fired it into a bucket of sand to see the bullets were not striking the baffles of the mod. It was fine.
Next job is to machine up the fore sight element and make one for the rear sight too. I'll finish with blacking it, when i get a chance to fabricate a hot water tank at the weekend.

its a strange one. you can buy the moderator to fit on your air rifle no licence put it on the rimfire and as you say it needs adding but if you sell the gun you cant just remove the mod and use it on something elseAnd have the mod added to your ticket?
