Made these little brackets for the Mrs to hang some tin buckets on our trellis. Just happened to have a half tin of paint I'd mixed for a customers job years ago left in the cupboard which matched quite well!

Needed to make a stainless roller 325mm long and 60mm diameter. All I had was some 2.5" Dia shaft but it had a keyway in it so I had to weld it up.
First pass in.
About another 6 passes and it was filled.
So into the lathe.
Turned down to 60mm, removed from the lathe and chopped off the end on the bandsaw.
Next job was to drill out to approx 28mm dia and then counterbore each end for bearings.
Roller completed.

^^^ How wonderfull that is, you just think about it, just pop it into the lathe, take a skim, drill the center, make a recess in the ends to hold some bearings, and bang out it pops. Takes no time at all
. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Can't understand why these engineering types charge so much for this, when it is just so simple and easy. I remember there is on utube two guys building a 4wd mini and in one episode they did a time laps of how long it took to build a part, from start to finish. This build didn't include planning or material gathering time, just the build. That made me feel much better

We have just formed a "Canon Division" as a couple of us fancy a Canon. I quite like the idea of an American Civil war type field gun. But totally impractical. I know someone who has a field canon made by Purdy. He has never fired it as it could impact (?) it's value. His other Canon takes one and a half pounds of black powder!
One of the guys has suggested an oxy cylinder as the basis for a barrel with bowling balls for ammunition. Not sure that would work though.
See how easy it is to get carried away......

The trick with cannons is to buy an elderly Shotgun with a large smooth bore and percussion ignition. Legally you can change the wooden stock for a stock made with a 4-inch steel jacket and some wheels. The shotgun barrel is still there, inside. This means you can own and fire the Cannon on a shotgun licence. The Cannon in the photo is an old Indian .577 inch bore shotgun, possibly made from an old Brown Bess Musket?
If you want to make a smaller Cannon, Des buys cheap Black Powder pistols and puts the barrel inside a new 'shell' that can be removed. Still legally a Pistol...but on wheels.

The lathe is one machine I could not do without and what I love about them is you can take an old scabby looking lump of old shaft and after a while you end up with a nice shiny roller.^^^ How wonderfull that is, you just think about it, just pop it into the lathe, take a skim, drill the center, make a recess in the ends to hold some bearings, and bang out it pops. Takes no time at all

First thing today was to make a pintle bush, it was 100mm OD and all I had was 150mm so I had to use that.
Started to turn it down, Acetal is beautiful stuff to turn.
Drilled out then bored to size.
First job done.
And pressed into the housing.
I had to get the hoover out though, this is the only downside of turning Acetal
Next up it was the rudder tube bush, had some 50mm OD but the bush was 52.85mm so I had to use a chunk of 80mm OD.
New with old.
Next i made a couple of studs up for the packing gland, easy enough as I had some 3/8" bolts so just had to thread them, I then machined off the hex and threaded the other end but forgot to take a snap of that.
Next up I had to mill out the keyway in the shaft as it was chewed up. It was supposed to be 3/8" but thankfully I got away with taking out out to 7/16". I then made up a stepped key, 7/16" to 3/8", for it so that the original tiller arm would fit.
Last job was to make a locking tab for the prop nut. I used to mill them out but now I have the plasma it is very quick to do them, instead of about 15min milling it takes about 30 seconds on the plasma

Started with machining out some of the damage on the Panther gearbox. Big lump of cast iron due next week....was that a gunwhale roller for potting by any chance? i make made a couple of them thou..nowhere as nice as that! top marks

No, it is an upright roller to keep the rope into the hauler, see pic below. The one I made was from Sch40 pipe but it is wearing through so instead of trying to source a short length of Sch160 I decided just to use solid.
The roller system I fitted to that boat was actually made for his previous one and I transplanted it onto this one.

I made a crap water feature.
It was supposed to be a filter, just a proof of concept. The cloth on the outlet wasn't fine enough (And too small) and the stuff I wanted to filter is floating so I need to skim the surface somehow. That or just drain the pool, my brother insisted we put it up when it was really hot and it's not been touched since.

Well today was the day of the knives, weather was poor so most of the boats took a day off and did some maintenance.
I got 4 of the Spencer Carter wear covers to fill up.
I was also asked to make 2 of my own design ones.
Why is my first weld in stainless always half decent
then the next few passes it goes downhill
I then had to make up 4 rudder bushes, each one slightly different OD but thankfully I didn't have to go out in the torrential rain to measure as the skipper got the bushes out intact.
