Got the tiller arm finished today.
Cut the keyway and faced off the surface.

Threaded a bolt into the centre holes with thread lock then chopped the hex off so they can be used as locating pegs.

The boatyard only had 100mm socket caps which were too long so I made up some stainless spacers.

Did a few other bits and pieces for the job such as turning the end of the new tube but no pics.

Great work as always.
Today I made these.

I then decided I was going to chuck up a bar 550mm long in the lathe and turn it to check how far out it was.

After a few runs of light cuts and some adjustments to the feet I got these readings.
0 is the furthest out and 470mm is the nearest the chuck.

Flushed with my success I thought I better get back to doing some work so I set up the steady on the Triumph and put some 2 1/" dia EN8 640mm long in it

I then faced the ends, drilled 15mm deep at 16mm dia , bored down 100mm with an 8.8mm drill, faced the bottom of the 16mm with a slot drill then tapped for a 1/8" BSP grease nipple. Flipped over and did the other end. I have done 2 and another 3 to do tomorrow and then onto the Chiron to do some more to them.

All depends on the lathe I suppose. This one does not have any head adjustment as it sits on double v ways as does the saddle. The only way to adjust this therefor is to true the bed via the jacking feet.
People talk about levelling a lathe but in reality it doesn't need to be level, it just needs to be true to itself. Levelling is often the easiest way of doing that.I need to check my little Boxford I think I have not really done many checks like that

Not really sure, think it is a part for an underwater UV torch for divers doing NDT testing but not 100% certain on that. What's them for?
Could you use one of the adjustable live tail stock centers instead of playing with the feet ? Or do you have to true the bed entirely every critical job you do ?All depends on the lathe I suppose. Most jobs I don't use the centre as the parts are either short enough or I am doing internal or end work.Could you use one of the adjustable live tail stock centers instead of playing with the feet ? Or do you have to true the bed entirely every critical job you do ?
